Georgia High School Basketball Challenge Continues

We've already got two winners in round one.

We’re only one round into the Georgia High School Association’s basketball tournaments, but we already have the first two winners of the Patch Georgia High School Basketball Challenge.

Dan Matthews from Oconee Patch and Trey from Cartersville Patch proved to be the top prognosticators in the first round in Class AAAAA and Class AAAA, respectively, and each won a Patch prize pack, including a Patch polo shirt. They also took the lead in the competition for the Patch hoodie that goes to the top winners for the whole tournament in AAAAA and AAAA.

Matthews was correct on 25 of 32 AAAAA games, one win ahead of Fembot from East Cobb Patch, Travis Allen from Alpharetta-Milton Patch and allaboutthemoo from Cumming Patch.

Trey went 28-4 in picking the AAAA games, three games better than South Cobb Patch’s windhamkn and four better than Bago Hammers of Holly Springs-Hickory Flat Patch, gmcdowell of Lilburn-Mountain Park Patch, Drew of Woodstock-Towne Lake Patch and Smithrock of Stone Mountain-Redan Patch.

Although they trail Trey in the AAAA tournament, windhamkn and gmcdowell stand atop the pack in the hunt for the overall February Frenzy championship and a coveted Patch jacket.

Windhamkn picked 23 AAAAA and 25 AAAA games correctly to grab the first-round lead, one game ahead of gmcdowell, who had 23 AAAAA and 24 AAAA wins. What’s the difference between them? While gmcdowell gained a game when Chattahoochee’s boys scored the winning points with three seconds left against Pope, windhamkn made up for that loss with two girls picks: Mays over Flowery Branch and Mundys Mill over South Effingham.

Also in the hunt for the top title are Woodstock-Towne Lake Patch’s Drew and Dallas-Hiram Patch’s kthellsn with 46 wins each.
