Local Scholars Nicely Rewarded

Norcross High students received scholarships to the United States Naval Academy, Boston University, Valdosta State University and Georgia Institute of Technology.

Countless late night study sessions were not in vain for several students at Norcross High School. These students don't have to worry about the changes in the HOPE scholarship or taking out school loans and spending the next decade paying them off.

Dedication, focus and self worth helped local students become nicely rewarded in the education arena. The following students are excellent role models for the younger scholars and rising generation.

Norcross High School senior Rashid Malik Nelson received the Posse Leadership Scholarship which is a full tuition scholarship for Boston University. The elegibility with the scholarship is rather flexible as you must exemplify characteristics of a leader inside and outside of the classroom.

Rashid went through a three-interview process, the first being a group interview which listed hundreds of people, the second being a one-on-one interview for in which he meet with the directors of the scholarship program and the finalist interview, which was a group interview with 25 finalists and the admission directors from Boston University. A total of 10 students were awarded the scholarship to Boston University. The scholarship will cover tuition for four years at Boston University which is approximately $41,000.

Norcross High School senior Star Montana Reese received a $20,000 Broad Prize Scholarship which was awarded to 51 students in Gwinnett County. Star plans to attend Valdosta State University.

Norcross High School senior Andrea Howard received a USNA Appointment worth over $400,000. For the Class of 2015, the Naval Academy received well over 18,000 applications, an all-time record and more than any other service academy. All applicants were pre-screened and roughly 12,000 were designated as official candidates.  Candidates were required to complete extensive academic, athletic, and physical qualifications including a rigorous physical fitness test, a Department of Defense medical examination, and a local admissions officer interview.

Norcross High School senior Adam D. Greenstein received a National Merit Georgia Institute of Technology Scholarship and plans to major in Aerospace Engineering.
