No School Tuesday for Gwinnett County Students

Classes have been cancelled due to the extreme cold temperatures. But 12-month staff should report.

Peachtree Corners students who attend one of the Gwinnett County Public Schools in the city will have another day off of winter break.

The Gwinnett County Public School officials announced Monday afternoon that there will be no classes Tuesday, Jan. 7, due to the extreme cold temperatures.

The news came shortly before 3 p.m. that the state's largest school system has decided to cancel school.

The decision was made "due to the extremely cold temperatures expected overnight and concerns regarding safety and operational issues," said GCPS spokesperson Jorge Quintana in an email message.

GCPS began the day checking to make sure the 1,600 school buses were in good working order after being idle during the winter break, ensuring that all heating systems in the schools were operational.

During the evaluation that lead to the decision, school leaders also monitored the weather and checked with public safety agencies.

However, 12-month staff is expected to report to work on Tuesday.
