Blue Devils Diamond DeShields Named MVP in World Championship

Norcross High basketball standout helped the USA Women's basketball team wins against Spain for the gold medal in the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship.

The USA Basketball Women’s U17 World Championship team beat Spain on Sunday in order to win the gold medal for the year, according to USA Basketball. Norcross High's Diamond DeShields earned the MVP award for the tournament.

After beating Spain 75-62, the USA team took home first place in the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship at Sporthallen Zuid in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

DeShields ended up grabbing eight rebounds and giving out five assists during the game. Throughout the entire season, the offense guard set two USA highs with her 14.8 ppg. set and 108 field goal attempts.

She also won gold medals with USA teams for the U19 World Championship team in 2011 and the U18 Americas Championship team in 2010.

For Norcross High, DeShields helped the Lady Blue Devils score a spot in the semifinals earlier this year, but . Norcross had won the previous two state titles.

In May, the Norcross senior announced that she is after she graduates from Norcross in 2013.
