Over 100 Teams Competing in Gwinnett Readers Rally

The event is Saturday at Berkmar High.

The seventh annual Gwinnett Readers Rally continues to nurture love of books among local students. A large contingent of students, parents, school administrators, teachers, and community members are expected to attend this year’s rally Saturday at Berkmar High, 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

More than 100 school teams will participate in the literary quiz-bowl competition for student readers in grades 4-12.

Readers will compete in 10-student teams. They will read books on a pre-selected list and will answer questions about the books.

There will be 102 teams, representing an increase over the 97 teams that competed in 2011, vying for the countywide title this year The teams represent 63 elementary schools, 24 middle schools, and 15 high schools. At the conclusion of the event, four elementary school, two middle school, and two high school teams will earn spots to compete in the final challenge.

The winning teams in 2011 were from Minor Elementary, Osborne Middle, and Berkmar High schools.

The Championship Readers Rally competition will take place Thursday, March 8, at the GCPS TV Studio at the Gwinnett County Public Schools Instructional Support Center in Suwanee. The final competition will air on GCPS TV Monday, March 12, through Sunday, March 18, at 11 a.m. and 8 p.m.
