Peachtree Corners Students Compete in Science Fair

Over 40 students from Norcross and Duluth cluster schools to compete in Regional Science and Engineering Fair on Friday.

On Friday, Feb. 24 nearly 900 students from Gwinnett County Public Schools will compete in the annual Gwinnett County Regional Science and Engineering Fair.

The fair is designed to provide students a chance to exhibit their work and discuss their discoveries with volunteer judges who are expert in their fields.

This is the fair's 34th year in which high school and middle school students enter their projects in the competition. This year elementary school students have been invited to compete.

"Academically, we have seen that when students are given the chance to be successful that they repeatedly rise to the occassion," said Dr. Jonathon Wetherington, GCPS's director of science. "Allowing elementary students to complete, encourages students at an earlier age to explore the possibilities and discover the relevance of their knowledge."

From the Norcross cluster; 21 students from and six students will participate; from the Duluth cluster, 16 students from are participating.

Students who are competing at the fair have already earned first place at their local school science fairs. Their projects will be judged by some 150 Georgia professionals. The projects will be judged on quality, accuracy, creativity and experimental design.

In this year's fair 899 GCPS students from 44 schools are participating. In addition, students from Notre Dame Academy and City of Knowledge, two private schools in Gwinnett County and area homeschooled children are participating.

This year's event is being held at the on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth starting at 3:30 p.m. An awards ceremony is scheduled for 7 p.m.
