Three Norcross HS Students To Receive Foundation Scholarships

Emma Reidy, Allison Fisher and Christina Valentini are among 15 students to be awarded scholarships from the Gwinnett County Public Schools Foundation Fund.

Each spring the Gwinnett County Public Schools Foundation Fund, Inc. coordinates a number of scholarships which are awarded to graduating seniors.

Three Norcross High School students are among 15 Gwinnett County Public School Students to receive scholarships from the school district's Foundation.

Students are invited to apply for the scholarships and are selected by committees made up of GCPS employees and community members. The winners are selected based on the student's essay, academic record and service to his or her community.

Emma Reidy received a $2,500 scholarship from the Alton C. Crews Teaching Scholarship fund which is given to a graduating senior who is pursuing a career in education. Following is an excerpt from her winning essay:

I have been inspired by teachers who communicate a love of learning. .... Such teachers have shown me that teaching is learning and learning is teaching, that both processes are reciprocal and never complete.

Allison Fisher received a $2,500 scholarship from the Jim Maran Scholarship for STEM Studies. The scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who plans to enroll full-time in an undergraduate course of study in science, technology, engineering or mathematics. The scholarship will be awarded for four consecutive years providing the student maintains a minimum cumulative college GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Following is an excerpt from her winning essay:

I've chosen to study computer science because, in the simplest terms, I am a problem solver. .... The field of computer science fascinates me because of the explosion of new computer-based technologies that my generation faces. .... I think that the STEM studies are critical to educational development of my generation because they emphasize the constructive problem-solving skills that we will need to confront the major challenges of our age.

Christina Valentini received a $2,500 scholarship from the Peach State Federal Credit Union. The scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who is pursuing a career in education. Following is an excerpt from her winning essay:

I cannot imagine myself in a career other than education ....Knowing that I will have a job that values success, pride and making a difference in the lives of others will be meaningful, challenging, exhilarating, but exceedingly worthwhile. The ability to teach fundamentals and ethics are far more valuable than money or fame can ever reward.
