NHS's DeShields Garners Two Prestigious Awards

This week the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced that the high school standout basketball player received the Miss Georgia Basketball and Naismith Girl's High School Player of the Year.

Norcross High's Diamond DeShields, a star player and guard for the Lady Blue Devils, recently received two high honors: Miss Georgia Basketball and the Naismith Girl’s High School Player of the Year.

The Atlanta Tipoff Club announced the news in press releases this week during the state playoffs.

DeShields, the 6'2" senior dedicated to the University of North Carolina, was given the prestigious Naismith Award because of her outstanding performance during the 2013 basketball season. The decision came from a group of basketball journalists from around the nation who make up the Naismith Awards high school voting academy, according to the release.

"I want to thank the Atlanta Tip-Off Club for this a prestigious honor," said DeShields about the Naismith Award. "I am very grateful and humbled to be in the company of such a tremendous list of past recipients, players I have admired."

"For the national voters to select Diamond as the Naismith Trophy winner validates what we've seen her do night in and night out over the last four years right here in Atlanta," said Eric Oberman, Executive Director of the Atlanta Tipoff Club, in the release. "She is a special player and very deserving of this honor."

DeShields was picked for the other title, Miss Georgia Basketball, by the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s board of selectors, which is comprised of regional basketball coaches and administrators. She and other Atlanta Tipoff Club honorees will be recognized at the Atlanta Tipoff Club Naismith Awards Banquet on Tuesday, March 19.

Aside from these awards, DeShields also has been rated the third best college prospect in the nation and was named the MVP in the FIBA U17 World Championships last summer, among many other notable honors.

She and the other Lady Blue Devils will go head-to-head against North Gwinnett at 4 p.m. this Saturday, March 2, at Georgia Tech in the Class AAAAAA state semifinals.
