Norcross Routs Roswell 49-14

Blue Devils, who scored 35 points in the first half, are now 3-0.

The Norcross Blue Devils scored 35 points in each of their first two victories this season.

They beat that average in the first half Friday on their weay to a 49-14 win over Roswell Friday night at Norcross High. The Blue Devils relied on a potent passing attack and a hard-nosed running game to improve to 3-0.

The opening drive for Norcross set the tone for the evening with the backfield tandem of Alvin Kamara and sophomore Myles Autry establishing the run against the Hornets.

The drive culminated with an 18-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Joseph Wilber to University of Tennessee commit Jason Croom.

Wilber continued to air it out on the next drive, finding senior wideout Anthony Autry on an 8-yard dig route that turned into a superlative 32-yard touchdown. Autry corralled the ball in the middle of the Roswell zone defense, then made multiple defenders miss as he bounced outside en route to the second Blue Devil score.

Wilber made it three touchdown passes with a 45-yard pass to J.T. Tolbert on another great play after the catch. Wilber ended the night 6-for-6 for 120 yards passing and 48 more yards on the ground.

The Blue Devil defense started fast as well with big hits and a high level of energy. Defensive end Dominique Mason wreaked havoc in the Hornets backfield along with linebackers Tommy Tate  and Tanner Maloof, who had a 20-tackle game last week against Parkview.

The defense consistently gave the Norcross offense great field position and the Hornets were held scoreless in the first half.

Kamara scored on a 1-yard run in the midway through the second quarter to make it 28-0, virtually putting the game away.

On the next Norcross possession, backup quarterback Bo Swanson found Croom for a spectacular 78-yard touchdown. Swanson fired a crisp pass in the slot to Croom and the senior standout did the rest, bolting past the Hornets secondary for the score. Croom had four catches for 112 yards and two touchdowns

Autry stopped Roswell’s opening drive of the second half with a leaping interception, returning it to the Hornet 15-yard line. Running back Jay McNair scored shortly after on a athletic 15-yard run.  Roswell broke through to score in the third quarter making the score 42-7.  On the ensuing kickoff, Myles Autry caught the ball at the Norcross 5 and slowly accelerated until he hit a crease and outran the Roswell special teams for an electrifying touchdown return.

The final score of the night was a short jaunt by Roswell running back Andrew Kwateng, who had 136 yards on 18 carries.

With the win, the Blue Devils move to 3-0 on the season and have momentum going into their homecoming game against crosstown rival Duluth next Friday. Roswell fell to 0-3.
