Scanning the SEC: Florida-Tennessee Looks Large

Taking a look at the Southeastern Conference football schedule for Sept. 15.

It may not have the appeal of the 1990s, when Steve Spurrier and Phillip Fulmer patrolled the sidelines for Florida and Tennessee. But this Saturday's Gators-Vols game in Knoxville can claim to be the top SEC matchup of the weekend.

And there's still a bit of coaching intrigue. Will Muschamp (Florida) and Derek Dooley (Tennessee) both were assistant coaches under Nick Saban at LSU. So we'll see who gets bragging rights for the next year.

The teams are ranked in the Top 25 (Florida 18th, Tennessee 23rd), and both are on Georgia's schedule later in the year. So stay tuned.

Speaking of the Bulldogs, they are sitting at No. 7 (AP) after last week's 41-20 win over Missouri. Road wins are never easy in the SEC, so Georgia can claim a bit of early season momentum.

Saturday night, UGA hosts Florida Atlantic. It could be labeled as a "trap" game, one in which the Bulldogs could get a rude awakening if they are looking ahead to SEC matchups with Vanderbilt, Tennessee and South Carolina the next three weeks.

Also, the SEC office notes that Georgia has won 12 consecutive regular season games (dating to 2011), the longest such streak during Mark Richt's tenure in Athens.

Another one with interesting potential: No. 14 Texas at Ole Miss. Can the Rebels spring an upset?
