Peachtree Corners Residents React to Cityhood Status

Visitors at Sunday's Peachtree Corners Festival were pleased and impressed with the announcement that their town is now officially a city.

An official proclamation -- read at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Peachtree Corners festival and attended by multiple county and state dignitaries -- makes Peachtree Corners the first new city created in Gwinnett County since 1956.  

The willingness of the crowd to take part in the festival in 106 degree weather, the hottest ever recorded on a July 1 in Atlanta, was a clear sign of the excitement surrounding the future of the city.  

Former and current residents of the town spoke with Peachtree Corners Patch about their feelings following the official proclamation:

  • "It's great!  We were very impressed with how the city has taken steps to become independent." Del Gonzalez (grandmother to the Oswald Brothers of the Oswald Brothers Band)
  • "We love Peachtree Corners!  I have lived here for 28 years and have always wanted it to happen.  It just brings such a sense of community to the area."  Christine Robinson (Peachtree Corners resident and Keller Williams Real Estate employee)
  • "This will give us more control over the growth of our town, and the direction that it's headed in."  Janice Crosby (Peachtree Corners resident and also a Keller Williams Real Estate employee)
  • "It's a very exciting time.  It's great to see how the area has come so far since the 1970s, when I first lived here."  Chris Ballar (candidate for Gwinnett County Probate Judge.  Ballar's parents still reside in Peachtree Corners.)
