Point-n-Click, Peachtree Corners-Berkeley Lake, and Vote!

Peachtree Corners-Berkeley Lake Patch readers could help make a $5,000 difference for the American Cancer Society with a simple point and click.

It's almost May, which means the annual Gwinnett Relay for Life will, once again, take over the Gwinnett fairgrounds to benefit the American Cancer Society. It’s the world’s largest "Relay for Life" event and just like last year, Peachtree Corners and Berkeley Lake residents can be among the thousands who will help raise money to fight cancer and even take part in one of the largest group dances in the world – the annual MADAC Purple Glove Dance.

“The significance of the purple glove is that the Relay for Life’s signature color is purple,” says Mothers And Daughter Against Cancer (MADAC) co-founder Susan Hightower-Graveline of Peachtree Corners – herself a two-time cancer survivor.

MADAC has been playing a significant role in the annual Relay for Life event for years, raising thousands upon thousands of dollars for the American Cancer Society – in addition to the group’s various fund-raising efforts that benefit other organizations that are also fighting cancer, such as Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite.

The Purple Glove Dance is just one of the fun events that go on during the Gwinnett Relay for Life weekend, and Graveline is anticipating another large turnout for the dance – rivaling last year’s estimated 7,000-to-8,000 dancers.

“We’ve had 10,000 gloves donated again this year by Kimberly-Clark,” says Graveline, “and MADAC is going to do it again.”

But you don’t have to wait for the first weekend in May to make a big difference for the cause.

Here’s the deal; last year’s MADAC Purple Glove Dance was videotaped and produced into a lively music video and is now seeking online votes. If the MADAC Purple Glove Dance video gets the most votes among a variety of videos by Relay for Life teams across the country then MADAC and its supporters get the pride of winning $5,000 for the American Cancer Society – money pledge by 4 The Fight - in addition to the funds that MADAC will otherwise raise during the Gwinnett Relay for Life event.

The Relay for Life goes on all night with a wide variety of participants from all over metro Atlanta; from some of the area’s biggest and well known organizations to local grassroots fundraisers doing everything from selling food to offering activities for the kids that will raise money to fight cancer.

“It’s amazing,” Graveline says, “watching the fairground go from an open field to a huge tent city and then back to an open field over the course of a day or so.”

For more information about the event, visit Gwinnett Relay for Life or MADAC. And remember to vote for the MADAC Purple Glove Dance video as often as you like to help win $5,000 for the American Cancer Society.
