Moratorium Issues Discussed at City Council Meeting

Peachtree Corners Mayor acknowledges the 90-day moratorium has created issues for some residents and businesses.

In its weekly meeting the City Council met to finalize the ordinance to create the position of city manager. But the 90-day building moratorium placed by Gwinnett County was what was on most people's minds who attended the meeting. It was intended to avoid such problems as the new city of Johns Creek faced when a permit for an adult video and merchandise store, the Love Shack, was able to get permitting before the city could officially manage the planning and zoning explained Mayor Mike Mason. Unfortunately a blanket moratorium also affects homeowners seeking a building permit to build a new back deck or a business owner who wants to reconfigure the interior of an office building to accommodate a new client. "We will keep the moratorium as…

May 16, 1777: On this day in 1777, British-born Georgia Patriot and signer of the Declaration of Independence Button Gwinnett receives a bullet wound in a duel with his political rival, Georgia city Whig Lachlan McIntosh. Three days later, Gwinnett died as a result of the gangrenous wound. McIntosh was also shot in the duel, but the wound was not fatal. Button Gwinnett was born in Down Hatherly, Gloucestershire, England, and was baptized in Gloucester in 1735. He was married and began a career in trading while still in Britain. Volunteers Deliver Smiles One Meal at a Time

Meals on Wheels program delivers to housebound clients in the Peachtree Corners, Norcross, Duluth and Lilburn areas.

By Cheryl Collins What’s it like to be involved with Norcross Meals on Wheels? We have been the lucky recipients of many hand-crocheted doilies and potholders from Ms. Eula Mae, whose hands were always busy with a ball of yarn. Ms. Mary blessed us many times over, especially when it was raining.  Ms. Lena loves to show us her family photo album. She may forget that we’ve already seen it, but she can certainly remember the details of her youth. We’ve known Mr. and Mrs. S. (name omitted at family's request) for years. She nursed him back to health after a debilitating stroke, so it was quite sad when she died, leaving him behind and still in a wheelchair. These folks are our clients, and we are the volunteers who have had the pleasure of …

Gwinnett Police were able to use DNA evidence recovered from the crime scene to make the arrest.

On Friday, May 11, Gwinnett Police arrested a convicted felon for the rape of a Peachtree Corners woman that occurred on March 18, 2012 in the Bristol Court Apartments. Shortly after the crime, Gwinnett Police circulated a sketch of Lorenzo which lead to questioning by detectives. "Police had interviewed Bradley a few days after the attack, due to a 'suspicious person' call from another resident of the complex," said Smith. However, there was not enough evidence at the time to charge Bradley. During the investigation the Crime Scene Unit and the Special Victims Unit …

Spinach Salad Perfect for Spring

There’s nothing better to whet your warm weather palate than some tasty and nutritious spinach salad.

Spinach served in a salad gives lots of bang for the buck. It’s full of B vitamins and pairs well with so many toppings from meat to fruits and cheeses to nuts. To top that off it is good served with both savory and sweet dressings. Since folks like spinach raw and cooked it can be topped with either a warm or cold dressing.  This versatile vegetable brings many options to the table. Make almost any spinach salad, top it with chicken or salmon and you have a delightful main dish. I love meals like this because you can get in and out of the kitchen quickly and without even turning on the stove; that is, of course, if you have some pre-cooked chicken or fish. A rotisserie chicken from the market makes it a cinch.  By the way, try throwing …
