Training for a Triathlon

Tutu Triathlon?

Our intrepid Peachtree Corners resident continues her journey in training for her first triathlon.

The whole hot mess started on St. Patrick's Day. My triathlon training partner-in-crime (Donna) and I had just finished a 10-mile bike ride. We were within spitting distance of an Irish pub, and despite the fact that we were beyond sweaty disgusting in our bike shorts and tops, we stopped in for a post-ride beer in celebration. Even though it was only 2:00 in the afternoon, the place was already packed with party goers, wall to wall green. And of course, we looked terribly out of place. We managed to score a table, and noticed three ridiculously cute 20 something Guinness Girls strolling around, wearing ultra-short green tutus, serving beers.  At that exact moment, Donna and I looked at each other, and burst out in unison, "Tutus. We NEED …

Reader Urges 90-Day Moratorium Be Reversed

One Peachtree Corners resident says the public should have been notified before City Council decided to pass the moratorium.

Letter to the Editor: Shocked, betrayed, and angered are words to describe my reactions upon learning the new Peachtree Corners City Council members approved a 90 day moratorium on certain services including, building permits and business licenses. While I had my doubts about the proposed new city, I have been a supporter until this moratorium came to my attention. I was excited that so many candidates with impressive education, work experience, and community leadership experience stepped up to lead our new city. After the elections, it appeared we were fortunate to have a diversified council with a depth of experience. That is why I am so shocked to learn that one of the first things the council decides to do is: a) impose a moratorium …

I am not surprised. This is the kind of tactics I expected from the former "fraternity" of power.   more ›

Airport Committee: 'We Gave It Our All'

We were given a task which we took very seriously, and we were committed to seeing it through.

Dear Editor: I had decided to wait until the accusations subsided before sending you this letter; however it seems that a few people have decided to inflame this issue with unsubstantiated accusations for a long time to come. Therefore, I am led to write this letter now. Anyone who attended the Airport Privatization Review Committee meetings would know that we could not have come to consensus on the issue of commercialization. There were attempts on the part of the pro-expansion members to derail our task more than once, starting with the blindside resolution to dissolve this committee back in December of 2011. The pro-expansion members knew of the plan well in advance, and those of us who are against commercialization had no idea until we…

It's interesting to note after reading the Kinton report that not once did it mention that "a commercialized Briscoe is not viable". What it actually says is "The capacity constraints of Atlanta will drive the future success of airports" in the metro region..... Ops, I guess one should not count on people actually reading the report! I am guessing that the members of the Committee would prefer …   more ›

Speak Out: Should Commercial Flights Be Allowed at Briscoe Field?

This week the Airport Privatization Citizen Review Committee rejected recommending that Gwinnett's airport should add commercial passenger service.

The fate of Briscoe Field is still up in the air. The Airport Privatization Citizen Review Committee which was set up by the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners to study the feasibilty of allowing a private company to run the county-owned facility, voted 6-0 (with five committee members abstaining) to keep the facility as a general aviation airport. The proposal to privatize the airport has been hotly debated. Those favoring the proposal felt that allowing commercial flights at Briscoe Field would bring revenue and jobs to the county. But home owners living nearby oppose the move claiming the increased noise, air and automobile traffic would affect their quality of life - and their home values. What do you think of this issue? Are you …

Henry...That whole argument lacks logic. It would be like me saying, "If you moved into a neighborhood that had a convenience store on the corner, you shouldn't complain or be concerned when they build a major mall next door. .....It's absurd.   more ›

Is the Cost of Playing Baseball Too High?

The price of getting our children outfitted to play baseball and softball is rising. A New York Times article explores the era of the $250 baseball bat.

Have you bought a baseball glove for your Little Leaguer lately? Did you pay more than $100 for it? How about a $250 bat? A New York Times story headlined "Big Price Tags Attached to Even the Littlest Leagues," looks at the big business of equipping youngsters for participation in youth baseball and softball leagues, quoting those costs and more. "A batting helmet protects tiny heads for $39.99," the Times reports. "A pair of Nike Jordan Black Cat cleats will make your child fast and fashionable at $51.99 until he or she outgrows them." So what do you think? Has the cost of bats and gloves taken our kids too far from the simpler days of sandlot and playground ballgames? Or have you had better luck finding more modestly-priced equipment for…

Iron Girl Triathlon Quickly Approaching

With the Iron Girl triathlon less than a month away, a Peachtree Corners resident continues training for her first triathlon despite being hit by a car last month.

One month from now, I’ll be competing in my first triathlon, the Iron Girl. I’ve been training since January, and if you’ve been following my journey, you already know that my training suffered a major set-back after I was hit by a car four weeks ago while riding my bike.  I've been managing the pain with prescription medication and a positive outlook.  I've been faithfully visiting my physical therapist (Chris at Neurosport Physical Therapy, 10 min. from my house- love, love, love him) to rehab my separated shoulder (from hitting the windshield of the car), wrist and muscle issues in my legs, the result of multiple contusions.  Even a month after the accident, my bruises are still visible and tender.  I still struggle with getting …

It's Earth Day - Be Good to the Globe

Sunday is "Earth Day," a day set aside to encourage each of us to look for ways to conserve and protect our Earth's resources.

You can blame it on the hippie movement of the '60s when the youth of that generation embraced flower power and living a simpler life that did not include all of the trappings of their parents. It provided a spring board for a movement that would start future generations to look around their environment and become more aware of the impact their lives had on the earth and its resources. In the '60s and '70s, Americans were driving gas-guzzling V-8 sedans, companies ran factories that belched out pollutants with little thought or care of the environment. But there was a movement afoot that would one day change the way we all think about our environment. Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. Senator at the time, came up with the idea of Earth Day in 1970 …

No Clear Winner in This Week's Readers' Choice

In this week's poll, we asked Peachtree Corners readers to vote for the restaurant with the best outdoor patio.

There are a host of great outdoor dining spots in Peachtree Corners, and we thought this would really bring out a great response from our readers but not so. Only 11 Patch readers voted on this week's Readers' Choice survey. Some of the restaurants only received one vote. Two received two votes, Mambos Italiano and Tavern at Medlock Bridge, which created a tie. Please remember to take a moment and make your choice - and add a comment to ensure your choice has a better chance to win. Stay tuned - next week we'll be asking for your favorite florist. Speak Out: What's a Stay-At-Home Mom Worth?

Do you agree with Salary.com's assessment of $112K?

For 12 years Salary.com has calculated the worth of both stay-at-home and working moms based on surveys of more than 8,000 mothers. In this year's assessment, the website has concluded that the annual salary equivalent of what a stay-at-home-mom does is $112,962. Do you agree? This survey comes on the heels of full-time moms being in the spotlight thanks to a negative comment that Democratic strategist Hillary Rosen made toward Ann Romney, the wife of Republican Presidential candidate hopeful Mike Romney.   Catch all of the Peachtree Corners news.
