One parent went to drop off her daughter at the school one day and everything was gone inside.
In March, reader Alda Manning wrote to Patch saying that her granddaughter's preschool appeared to have closed out of the blue. Manning explained that her granddaughter's father intended to drop her off March 6 at Peachtree Corners Preschool & Academy, a Montessori-style institution in the city of Norcross that taught children ages 2 through 5. When they arrived at the school, everything inside was gone. The phone number was inactive, and there was no sign on the outside to tell parents what happened. Did your child go to the school? Do you know what happened to it? Let us know in the comments. Manning expressed how disappointed she was, especially since the school had been one of the best preschools she's dealt with. "As far as experience…

The Wolfe Players at Wesleyan High School presented a moving rendition of Thornton Wilder’s great American play.
In 1938 Thornton Wilder wrote the now iconic American play Our Town. Set around 1901-1910, this play sends the simple message to stop and smell the roses. It’s interesting that even before televisions and computers, Wilder felt a need for us to slow down. Director Steve Broyles commented that, “After the Industrial Revolution, over 110 years ago, things were speeding up. Playwright Wilder was concerned that our lives were becoming too complex and we were missing the simple and important things.” Consequently, Broyles is very glad for his high school students to be considering this message as they present the play. One way Wilder’s play emphasizes simplicity is in the set design which was purposed by him and continues to be played …

Wesleyan School's longtime basketball Coach Jan Azar was among this year's inductees. The ceremony took place at Coolray Field.
On Saturday, May 5, the third annual Gwinnett County Public Schools Foundation Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony took place honoring six deserving Gwinnett graduates who excelled as athletes this weekend. Taking place at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, this year’s ceremony included a roster of inductees: former Brookwood High School and Falcons placekicker Jason Elam; one-time South Gwinnett and University of Georgia quarterback David Greene; Wesleyan’s longtime basketball coach Jan Azar; and all-around athlete Susan Brandau Hawkins, wrestler Scott Hage, and Coach Karl Bostick, who are all honorees with ties to Parkview. “We are fortunate to have so many who excelled in sports,” remarked GCPS Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks. “We also…

The University of Georgia president is stepping down in 2013.
University of Georgia President Michael Adams will tell the UGA community today at 11am what most already know: that he's leaving his job at the end of June next year. In June 1997, Adams arrived from tiny Centre College, succeeding President Charles Knapp. When Adams became president, Zell Miller was governor. The $100,000 family income cap on HOPE scholarship recipients had been removed in 1995, attracting more students from educated, affluent families and raising the academic bar for those wanting to attend the state's flagship institution. But there have been bumps in the road for Adams--some of them huge. At times during his tenure, the faculty has been at odds with Adams, who had not worked at a major research university before …

The University of Georgia president says he's stepping down next year.
For a few seconds, it looked as though Michael Adams wasn't going to make it through a speech about his leaving the President's Office at the University of Georgia. He had said that when he accepted the job in June 1997, with him were his parents, both of whom have since died, and his wife Mary. His face collapsed a little, but he recovered. Many of those in the audience may not recover. The university community remains in shock over Adams' sudden announcement that he will step down from his job at the end of June 2013. Only a few of the inner staff and upper level administrators learned late Wednesday that he would be leaving. After his brief, formal speech, in which he thanked those who have helped launch the University into the ranks of…
All types of references available for students are online for all to use.
Everyone knows that education has joined the digital era, and the Gwinnett County school system is no exception. The system has implemented eCLASS, a program that will phase in all-digital learning in classrooms. And online instruction already is common in some areas. Also, the GCPS website offers a fascinating resource. It's aimed at students, but as a public feature, it also can be useful for the taxpayers that foot the bill for the system. New Georgia Encyclopedia? Science In Context? World Book Advanced? Federal government info? Online newspaper websites? Those and more references are there. So hang onto this Peachtree Corners Patch feature, and share it with others. Let us know in the comments what you find most useful.

The NHS Foundation for Excellence 7th Annual Gala raised nearly $90,000 at the event held under the stars at the Fields Club.
The threat of rain didn't stop supporters of the Norcross High School Foundation for Excellence from showing up at the Seventh Annual Gala on Friday held at The Fields Club in Peachtree Corners. Held for the second time at the outdoor venue under the stars, the event was filled with friends, neighbors, politicians, principals and teachers who came to show their support for the annual fund-raising event. "We had 545 people attend this year," said Jenny Chapin, co-president of the Foundation, "and we raised almost $90,000." The gala is not only a fund-raising event, it's also an opportunity to honor those in the community who have made significant contributions to Norcross HS and the community. The Foundation has been recognizing three …

It's not so pleasant to see a Locked Kindergarten. The real victims here are the children. Situations like this do not occur overnight somebody should have warned the parents so that they could not only make other arrangements but also prepare the children for the change. This may be a dramatic change for the children. . I wonder who will make up an explanation or words to the children who are …   more ›
