Marci Sledge takes over for the school, as the current principal is retiring.
The Gwinnett County school board has appointed a veteran educator to take over the helm of Pinckneyville Middle School. In a special called meeting May 9, board members approved a transfer of Marci Sledge to Pinckneyville Middle School. She is currently the principal at Trip Elementary in Grayson. In addition, she is a 2007 graduate of the district's Quality-Plus Leader Academy. She takes over for Wanda Yeargin, who is retiring. Her appointment is effective July 1. The Norcross High School teams are big fund raisers for the 2013 event scheduled for this weekend in Lawrenceville.
The 2013 version of the Gwinnett Relay for Life is near, and Norcross High is coming up big in fundraising. NHS ranks second in the most monies raised, with more than $38,300 pledged so far (as of midday May 8), according to the Gwinnett Relay website. Among participating teams, North Gwinnett High takes the top spot with about $72,000. Mill Creek High is in third place with more than $25,300 raised. Relay for Life, which is a function of the American Cancer Society, will be held at the Gwinnett Fairgrounds in Lawrenceville on May 10-11, beginning at 7 p.m. It's an organized, overnight fund-raising walk to raise money for cancer patients. The teacher resigned Monday, May 6, as a result of an investigation into an alleged incident involving a student.
A Mountain View High School teacher is facing a charge of sexual assault in connection with an alleged inappropriate relationship with a student. According to Gwinnett County Public Schools Director of Media Relations Jorge Quintana, Mountain View High School mathematics teacher Thomas Frederick Grimshaw, of 2840 Ashton Tree Court in Dacula, resigned Monday, May 6, as a result of a human resources investigation into the alleged relationship. The investigation began May 3 after MVHS principal Keith Chaney reported a possible sexual assault, which allegedly occurred at the school on April 29. The state Department of Education released the first results from the new Georgia College and Career Ready Performance Index which replaces Adequate Yearly Progress report.
Gwinnett County Public Schools scored above the state average in a new performance rating system that assesses whether schools are producing students ready for college. Peachtree Corners students who attend Duluth or Norcross high schools are included in this report. The state Department of Education released the first results, which are based on 2011-2012 data, from the new College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) on May 7. It considers achievement, progress, and the achievement gap using a 100-point scale, and replaces Adequate Yearly Progress used in No Child Left Behind. Karson Smith, a second grade student, has been named the Peachtree Corners Rotary Club's student of the month.
On Monday, May 6, 2013 during its weekly meeting, the Peachtree Corners Rotary Club recognized recognized Karson Smith who attends Simpson Elementary School, as its student of the month. Ten high schools in Gwinnett County have made Newsweek's 2013 list of the nation's top schools. Newsweek released the rankings May 6. The nonprofit is in need of supplies to give away for the upcoming school year.
Norcross Cooperative Ministries is in need of school supplies for a special giveaway planned in July. According to the nonprofit's website, the organization is in need of: Community members should bring school supplies in person to 2275 Mitchell Road, Norcros. Donation hours are: Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.; Tuesday, 4 p.m. - 8 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. - noon.
