Anne Marie Armstrong retains her position on the WNBA team, which announced its finalized roster May 22.
A Wesleyan School alumna will officially begin her WNBA career this Saturday, as the Atlanta Dream opens its season against the Tulsa Shock. Anne Marie Armstrong, who graduated from Wesleyan School four years ago, was drafted by the Atlanta Dream in April. However, the Atlanta Dream's 11-player roster was not finalized until this week, according to the team's website. So, if you are trying to find her on the court, look for jersey No. 3. The 6-foot-3-inch Armstrong will be playing the positions of guard and forward. Originally from Norcross, she is the only player on the Atlanta Dream's roster who attended a Georgia college. The wide receiver is headed into his senior year at Norcross High but he's still working on rehabbing his knee from an injury last football season.
Myles Autry is still working his way back from a football injury last season, but his spirits are high as he heads into his senior year. In an interview with BuckeyeGrove.com, the Norcross High wide reciever said he'd been afraid that colleges would retreat from his camp after tearing his knee ligaments in the semifinals last year. But, Autry says college programs have remained steady and kept up with his progress. In fact, he's received more than two dozen offers, according to Rivals.com. -- Which college football program should Autry chose? Norcross High School now at top of latest MaxPreps Cup rankings.
Norcross High School has jumped to the top of one well-known sports ranking, thanks to its winning girls and boys basketball championships. MaxPreps Cup standings place the Blue Devils as No. 1 currently, according to a May 20 report. The No. 2 spot is currently held by of Carmel High School in Indiana. The MaxPreps Cup ranks the top high school sports programs in the nation based on their success in a number of sports. Football, boys and girls cross country, volleyball, boys and girls basketball and wrestling are in the current standings. Once spring sports are added, the standings will likely change. Those final rankings will be published in July. No matter the final MaxPreps Cup rankings, Norcross High has had a stellar sports year. …
The Blue Devils won the Class AAAAAA state championship Monday, adding another win to the high school's 2013 state titles.
Norcross High has earned another state title in sports, and this time it's for boys golf. The Blue Devils won against Peachtree Ridge on Monday in the Class AAAAAA state golf championship at Spring Hill Country Club, according to Gwinnett Prep Sports. The title win was Norcross' fourth this school year. The Blue Devils also won the AAAAAA title in boys basketball, girls basketball and football, which was the first time the team had ever played in the finals. The Gwinnett Braves will hold a 5k and "Tripp Halstead Night" to raise money for the toddler injured in Barrow County last year.
The Gwinnett Braves announced Monday they will hold a 5k to raise funds for Tripp Halstead, the Barrow County toddler injured when a tree limb hit him in the head during Hurricane Sandy last fall. The race called "Tripp's Trot" will take place Saturday, June 22nd at 8am at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, Ga. Registration is $25 before May 22nd and increases to $35 the day of the event. There will also be a Fun Run. Registration for that is $20. Runners can register at trippstrot.com. The support will continue later that day with "Tripp Halstead Night" at the G-Braves game against the Syracuse Chiefs. High school spring practice is already underway. Here's a look at the upcoming season's football schedules for Duluth, Norcross and Wesleyan.
Football season is just four months away, and here's another reminder. The 2013 football schedules are out for Peachtree Cornerrs schools, as well as others in the Georgia High School Association. So here's something you can print and stick on the refrigerator to be ready. Some key dates: Duluth plays against Norcross on Sept. 20 and Weslyan will play their rival, Greater Atlanta Christian on Oct. 25. If you love tennis and you're good at running quickly, then you may earn a chance at court-side seats at the upcoming BB&T Atlanta Open -- by being a ball person. Most likely, you won't be actually sitting a lot, but you'll still be in the thick of the tennis action. The BB&T Atlanta Open will host tryouts for ball persons Monday, May 20, and Wednesday, May 22, at the Carl E. Sanders Family YMCA in Buckhead. Ball persons must be at least 13 years old by July 20, 2013, in order to try out. Proof of age is required. All applicants must be able to attend one of the tryouts to be considered. Norcross High's Lorenzo Carter has more than a dozen college football offers.
Norcross High's Lorenzo Carter is keeping his options open regarding his future college football career. But, it seems the entire college football arena wants him -- and badly. A top-notch defensive end, the junior has 32 college offers already, according to Rivals.com. He is considered one of the nation's top 10 overall prospects. This past football season, he helped lead Norcross High to a state title. And, in basketball this year, he played on the school's state championship team, as well. One of the latest schools to join the Lorenzo Carter bandwagon is the University of Florida Gators.
