Wesleyan Girls Soccer Team Reaches State Quarterfinals

Wesleyan's girls soccer team is among six Gwinnett County girls soccer teams that won second-round matches Tuesday night. The Peachtree Corners school's team advances to the Georgia High School Association quarterfinals, which begin Friday, May 10. Three Lady Wildcats Sign Scholarship Letters

Two Duluth High School Girls Basketball players and a member of inaugural Girls Lacrosse team heading to college on athletic scholarships.

Three Duluth High School seniors signed letters of intent to accept college scholarships in a ceremony attended by coaches, teachers, family and friends Wednesday (May 1). DHS Athletic Director Bill Navas welcomed everyone to the signing ceremony in the Atrium of the 600 Building, congratulated the athletes, and recognized their parents for their support. Lady Wildcats Basketball Coach Chad Pittman introduced Aerial Carruthers and Aleexis Lyons and cited their accomplishments. Carruthers, a four-year varsity player, will be attending classes and playing basketball at Auburn University of Montgomery. She averaged 5.7 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. “Aerial is a team player who works hard in an out of season,” Pittman said. “…

McCann's Shoulder "Feels Great," Starts Stint with G-Braves

The Atlanta Braves' catcher and Duluth-raised Brian McCann went to bat for the Gwinnett Braves Thursday at Coolray Field as part of his rehabilitation.

Atlanta Braves' catcher Brian McCann is working his way back to Turner Field. After playing three games with Class A Rome Braves, McCann started his stint with the Gwinnett Braves at Coolray Field Thursday (May 2). In October of last year, McCann, a Duluth High graduate, underwent surgery on his right shoulder.  While taking practice swings on deck before his first at-bat, a fan shouted to McCann and asked how his shoulder feels. “It feels great,” he shouted back. The G-Braves took on the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders Thursday evening. McCann went 1-for-4 with an RBI single in the 4-1 loss. Game two against the RailRiders is Friday night. McCann Leads G-Braves Homestand Highlights

The Atlanta catcher's rehab stint will be among the activities at Coolray Field beginning May 2.

Brian McCann's "homecoming" will only be part of the fun for the coming homestand for the Gwinnett Braves. McCann, the Atlanta Braves' veteran catcher and Duluth High grad, will continue to work back from offseason shoulder surgery during the G-Braves' eight-game homestand, which begins Thursday, May 2. He already has been getting in some work with the Class A Rome Braves. On Wednesday, McCann concluded that four-game stint with totals of .357 (5 for 13) and three home runs, according to the Rome News-Tribune. “I’m pretty excited about where I’m at,” McCann said before Wednesday's game. Brian McCann To Play With Gwinnett Braves Game

The Atlanta Braves star and Duluth High grad will begin his comeback on May 2.

Brian McCann is coming home to get ready for his 2013 baseball season. The veteran Atlanta Braves catcher, a Duluth High grad, will begin a rehab assignment with the Gwinnett Braves beginning Thursday, May 2, the G-Braves announced Wednesday (May 1). McCann, 29, underwent shoulder surgery last October, and already has played in some rehab games with the Class A Rome Braves in 2013. He has a .279 career batting average with 156 career homers with Atlanta. It's the third time that McCann has done a rehab stint with Gwinnett, the others being in 2009 (eye infection) and 2011 (left oblique). Blue Devils To Receive Sports Hall of Fame Award

The Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame to honor Norcross High School for its athletic program in June.

Norcross High School is receiving a special award for its athletic program from the Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame. According to the Gwinnett Daily Post, the award comes after a a successful year for the school. NHS became the first school in the Georgia High School Association program to win the Class AAAAAA titles in football, boys basketball and girls basketball in the same academic year. Norcross will be recognized at the Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on June 22, which will take place at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center. Check out the GDP article for more details. Atlanta Could Be Part of New College Football Playoffs

The Chick-fil-A Bowl could be a semifinal host in the system that will replace the BCS. Details are expected to be announced Wednesday.

Atlanta, which already is a strong player in college football, reportedly could become part of the new college football playoff system. ESPN has reported that the Chick-fil-A Bowl will be part of a semifinal-game playoff rotation that will replace the current Bowl Championship Series system, beginning after the 2014-15 season. Details are expected to be announced Wednesday (April 24) in Pasadena, where college football officials have been meeting to hammer out the new "plus-one" system. The new format will be called the College Football Playoff. Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, will host the first title game under the new format on Jan. 12, 2015, ESPN reported. Gwinnett Braves Hosting 'Boston Strong Night'

For Peachtree Corners baseball fans who want to find a way to help the victims of the recent Boston Marathon bombings, attend the May 7th game and a portion of ticket sales will go to OneFundBoston.org.

The Gwinnett Braves will show their support for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing with a special night to raise funds for the families affected. On May 7th, the G-Braves will play the Boston Red Sox's minor league team the Pawtucket Red Sox. First pitch is at 6:05pm at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville. Sports stars formerly from Boston, including Matt Ryan, Jason Varitek, Rodney Harrison and Dee Brown will be at Coolray Field for the game.
