Citizens Urged to Get Involved with Redistricting

The 2010 Census Data shows that due to increases in minority populations the county is minority-majority populated and faces fairness in redistricting decisions.

County residents recently gathered to hear and see 2010 Census Data regarding the growth of White, Hispanic-Latino, Asian and Black-African American populations and how population changes will affect redistricting. The 2010 Census showed a significant slowing in growth of the majority, white-non Hispanic, population. In combining minorities that have outgrown the majority, Gwinnett is now, statistically, a minority-majority county.     Collected every 10 years, the census data indicates increases by races and languages from 2000 to 2010 in the following: White from 427,883 to 429,563, Hispanic or Latino from 64,137 to 162,035, Black from 78,224 to 184,122, Asian from 42,360 to 84,763. Gwinnett Second Largest County in Georgia Based on 2010 Census

Population increased 36.9 percent from 588,488 in 2000 to 805,321 in 2010.

Gwinnett County is Georgia’s second most populated county based on 2010 figures released Thursday (March 17) afternoon by the U.S. Census Bureau. Gwinnett’s population grew to 805,321 in 2010, an increase of 36.9 percent from its 2000 population of 588,488, according to the Census Bureau. That’s more than 216,800 folks who have moved into Gwinnett over the past 10 years. Gwinnett was the fourth largest in the 2000 Census. Fulton, the most heavily populated county in Georgia, increased by 12.8 percent from 816,006 in 2000 to 920,581 in 2010.
