The Atlanta Braves' catcher and Duluth-raised Brian McCann went to bat for the Gwinnett Braves Thursday at Coolray Field as part of his rehabilitation.
Atlanta Braves' catcher Brian McCann is working his way back to Turner Field. After playing three games with Class A Rome Braves, McCann started his stint with the Gwinnett Braves at Coolray Field Thursday (May 2). In October of last year, McCann, a Duluth High graduate, underwent surgery on his right shoulder. While taking practice swings on deck before his first at-bat, a fan shouted to McCann and asked how his shoulder feels. “It feels great,” he shouted back. The G-Braves took on the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders Thursday evening. McCann went 1-for-4 with an RBI single in the 4-1 loss. Game two against the RailRiders is Friday night. First pitch is at 7:05pm. Watch the video to see McCann introduced to the crowd and his first at …

Chipper Jones is gone, and there are many new faces in the lineup this year. Share your predictions.
The Atlanta Braves have been winners the past two seasons. But the fact is, they have not been to the playoffs either season, although the playoffs once were routine for them. The Braves opened their 2013 season at Turner Field, on Monday, April 1. Gone is team icon Chipper Jones, who retired after the 2012 season. Also, the Braves will be without All Star catcher Brian McCann (Duluth High) for at least the first couple of weeks. Replacing Jones' bat and presence in the lineup will be a large challenge. Also gone is utility player Martin Prado, who was traded to Arizona in the deal that brought outfielder Justin Upton and third baseman Chris Johnson to Atlanta. Another key addition was free agent outfielder B.J. Upton. Also, the Braves …

A minor league baseball team in Pennsylvania is hoping so.
Pennyslvania’s Lehigh Valley IronPigs baseball team has a new feature for this upcoming season that it hopes will bring more crowds to the game. You just may not necessarily find them in the stands. The restrooms, however, could have to deal with an overflow crowd. The team is the first professional sports franchise to install urine-controlled video games in its restrooms, according to AOL.com VideoNews. The system, designed by a British company, gives the player the opportunity to control a slalom snowboarder with his urinal stream. It is reported to give the player the opportunity to attempt to score the most points – depending on the accuracy of his stream. The idea has reportedly made quite a splash in the UK. It is unclear yet how …

Have you bought a baseball glove for your Little Leaguer lately? Did you pay more than $100 for it? How about a $250 bat? A New York Times story headlined "Big Price Tags Attached to Even the Littlest Leagues," looks at the big business of equipping youngsters for participation in youth baseball and softball leagues, quoting those costs and more. "A batting helmet protects tiny heads for $39.99," the Times reports. "A pair of Nike Jordan Black Cat cleats will make your child fast and fashionable at $51.99 until he or she outgrows them." So what do you think? Has the cost of bats and gloves taken our kids too far from the simpler days of sandlot and playground ballgames? Or have you had better luck finding more modestly-priced equipment for…

Danny Cochran had two loves in his life - his family and baseball. And the two were intimately intertwined. For over 20 years Cochran was a fixture at the Pinckneyville Parks baseball fields, first as a father and baseball coach for his two sons, Jeremy and Joey, then later just because baseball was a part of who he was. He served in numerous volunteer capacities, including baseball commissioner, head of maintenance and as an umpire. He was a mainstay at the park said Bert Nasuti, former Gwinnett County District 2 Commissioner, who also worked along side of Cochran as a baseball coach. "If you pulled into the park and saw a red truck, you knew Danny was here," recalled Nasuti fondly. But last summer at the still young-age-of 59, he …

The Gwinnett Braves lost the final game of their homestand 4-2 Thursday at Coolray Field, but the game was overshadowed by an injury to pitcher Erik Cordier. Cordier was struck in the head by a line drive in the sixth inning, and was taken from the field on a stretcher. He was conscious and moving his arms and legs when taken to Gwinnett Medical Center. Syracuse right fielder Jesus Valdez was 1-for-3 with his 6th RBI of the series, and first baseman Chris Marrero was 3-for-3 with an RBI for Syracuse. For the G-Braves, outfielder Matt Young was 2-for-4. The G-Braves (38-35) remained in second place in the International League South. Gwinnett now hits the road, and will return to Coolray Field on July 4.
