It may seem unusual for two Gwinnett teams to play for a state championship — like Saturday's matchup between Norcross and North Gwinnett in the Class AAAAAA Girls Basketball final — but it's happened 28 times before.
We all know Gwinnett County is pretty competitive in Georgia high school sports. Just how competitive? All-time, Gwinnett schools have won or shared 311 Georgia High School Association sports championships, including the boys basketball title won by Dacula in 1938 and 10 more already won this school year. That's not a misprint. Even more telling is how many times county teams have squared off for the big trophy. When North Gwinnett and Norcross high schools meet Saturday for the GHSA Class AAAAAA girls basketball championship, it will be the 29th All-Gwinnett final in state history. The Norcross boys basketball team won 59-54 in a Saturday night thriller in AAAAAA high school action.
The Norcross boys basketball team defeated North Cobb in an exciting game that went down to final minutes of the game. The Blue Devils held just a 2-point lead at half time and kept it throughout the remainder of the game according to an online AJC report. The win sets up the Blue Devils to the state finals next week to be played in Macon.

The Wesleyan girls team and both teams for Norcross High won in the basketball quarterfinals.The semifinals for the state playoffs is Saturday at Georgia College and State University and Georgia Tech.

The Peachtree Corners' Wesleyan School girls team and both the girls and boys teams for Norcross High won in the quarter-finals advancing to the semifinals on Saturday, March 2. The Lady Blue Devils defeated Cherokee 76-43 in their Class AAAAAA game Tuesday. The girls will compete against North Gwinnett at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 2, at Georgia Tech. The NHS boys defeated Berkmar 56-35 Wednesday night. The Blue Devils will go up against North Cobb in the semifinals. The game starts at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Tech. Norcross High's Diamond DeShields, a star player and guard for the Lady Blue Devils, recently received two high honors: Miss Georgia Basketball and the Naismith Girl’s High School Player of the Year. The Atlanta Tipoff Club announced the news in press releases this week during the state playoffs. DeShields, the 6'2" senior dedicated to the University of North Carolina, was given the prestigious Naismith Award because of her outstanding performance during the 2013 basketball season. The decision came from a group of basketball journalists from around the nation who make up the Naismith Awards high school voting academy, according to the release. A computer ranking of boys basketball teams has Norcross High School team ranked No. 4 in Class AAAAAA. And Peachtree Corners Wesleyan School is ranked No. 6 in Class AA.

The Norcross team defeated opponent Dematha High from Maryland 68-67 in the Saturday night match up.
Norcross High's boys basketball teams came out on top in last Saturday's Hilton Invitational. Comprised of a series of games involving 12 teams from local Georgia schools and numerous teams from other states, it was a close game for Norcross High School, who also hosted the fifth-annual event. The Blue Devils defeated Dematha High from Maryland with a final score of 68-67 according to HoopSeen.com. Calling it the "best game of the Hilton Invitational," the website gave special notice to senior Brandon Goodwin, who finished with not only 21 points but also the game's winning goal with seven seconds left. Diamond DeShields and Shayla Cooper of Norcross High have a chance to play in the prestigious high school all-star game.
Nine high school basketball players from Gwinnett County, two from Norcross High, have been nominated to play in the annual McDonald's All-American all-star games later this year. Diamond DeShields and Shayla Cooper of the Lady Blue Devils were both selected. The other six players, who all play for girls teams, include: Lexie Brown and Peyton Whitted of North Gwinnett High; Kaela Davis and Kristina Nelson of Buford High; and Brookwood High's Courtney Gardner and Rebecca Walker. Isaiah Williams from Buford High was nominated as a boys all-star. The final rosters will be determined Feb. 14. The USA Basketball Women’s U17 World Championship team beat Spain on Sunday in order to win the gold medal for the year, according to USA Basketball. Norcross High's Diamond DeShields earned the MVP award for the tournament. After beating Spain 75-62, the USA team took home first place in the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship at Sporthallen Zuid in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. DeShields ended up grabbing eight rebounds and giving out five assists during the game. Throughout the entire season, the offense guard set two USA highs with her 14.8 ppg. set and 108 field goal attempts.
