Punching Cancer in the Face, One Drink at a Time

A local team kicks off their fundraising for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society with an event on Sunday. And their fight is personal.

For Lauren Smith, raising money with her Team in Training by running a marathon is extremely personal. Her best friend, Sarah Bird, was admitted to Emory yesterday for her final round of chemo and preparation for stem cell treatment for stage four Lymphoma, a blood cancer. Sarah was supposed to run a half-marathon with Lauren. It was going to be a celebration of living one year cancer free. They got matching tattoos and started making plans for the Savannah race, the Rock n’ Roll Marathon. Then she was re-diagnosed at the beginning of the year.  Lauren decided that there was only one thing to do: run the second half of the race for her, bumping up her goal to a full marathon. “I can’t help but remember why I am running. I am running for …

A Slice of the Green Life

Organic, Local Produce Available in Peachtree Corners

The Peachtree Corners CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) spring season starts soon.

Three years ago, almost to the day, I was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer; less than a week later, I underwent surgery to remove two malignant tumors in my throat in addition to my entire thyroid and surrounding lymph nodes.  Two rounds of radiation and daily meds followed. This unwelcomed news came as quite a surprise to me, as I had no real symptoms and I was not feeling sick.  Yet, there “it” was - the dreaded “C” word  unexpectedly knocked on my door and invited its wretched self into my life. Coincidentally, that same week, I received an unexpected e-mail from a local friend, Darlene Penner, announcing the prospect of a community supported agriculture group (or CSA for short) in Peachtree Corners. The largest certified organic…

MADAC Raises $16,000 for the American Cancer Society

Peachtree Corners residents were among the 15,000 supporters who made a big contribution to the fight against cancer through MADAC at the world's largest Relay For Life event.

The largest Relay For Life event in the world - the Gwinnett Relay For Life – raised over $1.5-million, with a lot of help from a lot of people all over the area…not the least of which were the members of Mothers And Daughters Against Cancer (MADAC) and the people of Peachtree Corners.  It all officially began Friday evening, at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds, with the annual “The Purple Glove Dance”; the brain child of MADAC co-founder and Peachtree Corners resident Susan Graveline. An estimated 12,000 of the 15,000 Gwinnett Relay For Life participants gathered, dawned purple gloves provided by Kimberly-Clark to showed their support in the fight against cancer as they danced en masse - led by Graveline.  “It gets, bigger every year,” …

A Blanket of Love

Cancer Patients at the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge of Atlanta can now wrap themselves in the warmth of a Feel The Love blanket - a gift from MADAC.

It’s a dark night; you can’t sleep.  The room is very comfortable - but it isn’t yours.  Thoughts drifting through your mind refuse to yield to the rest that your exhausted body desperately needs as you replay the treatment regimen of the day, the work you’ll do tomorrow and the words your doctor spoke back when this all began. “You have cancer.”  The staff has been very caring.  You think of your family and you know you’re supposed to “stay positive” but you just can’t muster the strength right now.  You just want to leave; to run away from the world and go home to the warmth and security of your own bed and your own blanket – and you cry – silently, deep in the dark night. Cancer survivors and cancer patients know this scenario; they've …

'Just Sew You Know,' A New Kind of Camp for Kids

Sewing camp offers Peachtree Corners kids a new dimension in summer camp fun.

Karen Krug runs one of the most popular children’s camps in Peachtree Corners. It isn’t a theater camp or a karate camp, it’s a sewing camp and kids are flocking to it. Krug converted the first floor of her home into two camp rooms with sewing machines lining the bright pink walls. Above the machines are inspirational quotes to motivate the students and projects ideas they might be interested in making. Krug grew up with in a sewing household but it was only after college that she decided to make her love of crafting a career. Originally, Krug owned a custom sewing business but when the economy took a downturn and the orders dried up she knew she had to do something different. It was then that a friend suggested to Krug that she teach …

My daughter has been taking after school classes & camp at Just Sew You Know student for about 2 years now. It is one of her most favorite activites!! She loves everything about it, and as a result she'll crank on her sewing machine at home & whip out a custom made purse, beach bag or neck roll for birthday presents. She is having a great time while learning lifelong skills. Just Sew You Know is …   more ›
