In a surprise turn of events, the Peachtree Corners mayor announced Tuesday night that the city would follow through on its back-up contract to purchase the 20.6 acres of undeveloped property on S.R. 141.
Tuesday night's City Council meeting began with proclamations and presentations - but finished with some surprising news - the city of Peachtree Corners is about to become a landowner. Announced just a few months ago as the new developer of the "Roberts property," Bob Cheeley, has decided he will not follow through with the plans to purchase and develop the 20.6 acre tract of land across from The Forum. "We were notified yesterday that Cheeley wasn't going to buy the property," said Mayor Mike Mason. The city had placed a back-up contract on the land in the event the original contract was not executed so will follow through and purchase the land. After eight months of meeting at various venues, the Peachtree Corners City Council will hold its first meeting in its new headquarters in Technology Park. The meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Dec. 4 at City Hall located 147 Technology Parkway. In the Special Called Meeting Tuesday, the Peachtree Corners City Council also approved authorizing the transfer of power of certain services and functions from Gwinnett County to the City of Peachtree Corners.
On Tuesday, May 1, the Peachtree Corners City Council met at 11 a.m. at the Fowler YMCA in a Special Called Meeting and moved to approve a 90-day moratorium on zoning, land use and other matters in preparation of July 1 when Peachtree Corners will begin legally operating as a city. After discussion and advice of Acting City Attorney, William (Bill) Riley the city council unanimously approved the moratorium which is intended to eliminate any last-minute filings for licenses and permits until the city is established.
