How to Be a Good Witness

Citizens can provide valuable information to help law enforcement solve crimes.

If you saw someone breaking into a car, robbing a bank or committing some other crime, would you be able to give law enforcement officers enough information to bring the perpetrator to justice? According to Gwinnett County Police Eastside Precinct Community Relations Officer Heather Stafford, reporting the crime is the first step. Stafford said witnesses are sometimes reluctant to notify police. After calling the police, Stafford said the next step should be to write down the details of what occurred. “By the time they call us and we get there, they forget half of the information,” Stafford said. Think Crime has Increased in Gwinnett Over the Last Decade?

Gwinnett Police and FBI statistics show the crime rate has dropped in recent years.

The Gwinnett County Police Department will soon release its complete annual crime report for 2010. Patch contacted the department for statiscal crime data, and below we have pulled together data over the past 10 years. To see previous annual reports from the department, click here. In general, the number of calls to the police department has gone down in recent years, with about 432,000 general calls in 2010. That's compared with 530,000 in 2009 and 532,000 in 2008. The number of traffic calls has decreased over the previous year, with about 194,000 this past year and about 211,000 in 2009.
