University of Georgia Provost Jere Morehead was officially named UGA's next president on Monday, according to a news release from the university system's Board of Regents. Morehead was announced as the sole finalist for the job last week. The Georgia Bulldogs were scheduled to hit Orlando on Wednesday to begin prepping in earnest for their New Year's Day Capital One Bowl matchup against the Big Ten's Nebraska. Coming off a heartbreaking SEC championship loss in which a few yards made the difference between playing for the national title and being passed over for a BCS berth, the Dawgs are looking to close out the 2012 season on a triumphant note. The SEC champion, Alabama, will pocket nearly $2 million for playing Notre Dame.
When Georgia came up short against Alabama in the SEC title game earlier in December, it cost the Bulldogs more than a national title shot. The difference in revenue for the Bulldogs between the BCS National Championship Game and the Capital One Bowl likely is about $600,000. As bowl season begins Saturday (December 15), it's another reminder that the postseason -- especially the elite BCS bowls -- is very lucrative for college teams. According to available information and estimates, SEC champion Alabama will make about $1.925 million for playing Notre Dame in the national championship game on January 7. Georgia, by virtue of its loss to the Tide, will play in the Capital One Bowl on January 1 -- a non-BCS bowl that has a far lower payout …

Well, here we are, on the brink of the SEC championship game, a game that many doubted the Georgia Bulldogs would reach this year, but which could propel them to the contest for the National Championship. The Bulldogs haven't won a national title since they beat Notre Dame in 1980, despite fielding one of the most consistently successful teams in the country. As Dan Wolken of USA Today put it, "There aren't many opportunities to put 30 years of frustration aside as a program, but Georgia is on the doorstep of one of them." For the Bulldogs, the hype about a possible national championship has begun.
Georgia's Athletic Director Greg McGarity might have been prescient when he asserted earlier this season that Georgia Tech, and not Florida, is really the Bulldogs' biggest rival. Who would have predicted a month ago that so much would ride on this weekend's in-state matchup? Georgia survived the easier of its back-to-back triple-option challenges by defeating Georgia Southern last week. Once again, the Georgia Bulldogs have overcome an early loss to South Carolina to earn their way to the SEC title game. But before heading down the road to Atlanta, the Dawgs host instate rivals Georgia Southern and Georgia Tech. “We know we’re playing in Atlanta and that’s settled right now, but we know there’s a lot of work in the meantime, which is the job of getting better on a daily basis,” head coach Mark Richt said early this week. A victory Saturday should send the Bulldogs to the SEC championship game.
Auburn's not very good this year. They're still looking for an SEC win, and Georgia might not be the best place to find it. The Bulldogs, while romping through some rough patches, are ranked fifth in the country and need only beat the Tigers to wrap up the SEC East Division and play for the league championship. Of course, Bulldogs coach Mark Richt isn't preparing his team for a cakewalk. "I told the guys `Get your mind right, right now,"' Richt said in an Associated Press story earlier this week. "We know they're capable of knocking us off." The Dawgs will be bringing a depleted receiving corps to Auburn. The triumphant Bulldogs return to Athens, back in the driver's seat in the SEC Eastern Division.
The Bulldogs did what they needed against Florida last week in what henceforth shall be known as the Hot Potato Bowl, but it wasn't pretty. The game produced more ugly turnovers than a remedial pastry class. Credit Georgia's resurgent defense for Florida's sloppiness. After a public chewing out by safety Shawn Williams leading up to the game, the Bulldogs were relentless. Junior linebacker Jarvis Jones' performance alone was enough to help earn him semifinalist status for two national awards, the Maxwell and the Bednarik. The next step for Georgia's emotional squad, heading into Saturday's Homecoming game against Mississippi, is to provoke fewer yellow hankies from the officials, Mark Weiszer reports for the Morris News Service. Don't look now, but Mississippi State is in the thick of the SEC title race. The Bulldogs from Starkville, Miss., are unbeaten in the SEC at 3-0 as they prepare to travel to Tuscaloosa and Saturday's game with No. 1 Alabama (4-0 in SEC). Game time is 8:30 p.m., ESPN. Mississippi State has enjoyed steady success under head coach Dan Mullen, a former University of Florida coach who took over in 2009. The Bulldogs are hoping for a strong performance, and some help from Florida, to get back into the SEC East title hunt.
We knew Bulldogs fans would be rooting for Florida this week, so the Gators can beat South Carolina and restore Georgia's opportunity to win the SEC East division. Aaron Murray's even telling people to. Murray told the AP that Georgia faithful have "a free pass" to be one-time Florida fans and added, "I definitely am." UGA head coach Mark Richt also got into the act, telling the press: "I'm definitely a Gator fan this week." Of course, what Richt, Murray and Bulldogs fans really need to concentrate on is getting the job done at Kentucky on Saturday.
