Gwinnett County School Board Discusses Looming Budget Cuts

Peachtree Corners public schools could be affected by the pending federal cuts, also known as sequestration which are set to take effect March 1.

The impending loss of millions of dollars due to federal budget cuts was on the minds of Gwinnett County school board members during their monthly business meeting Thursday in Suwanee. In a statement earlier this week, GCPS Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks, said the cuts would cost the district approximately $3.4 million, including Title I monies and allocations for special education. It is uncertain when exactly the cuts, scheduled to take effect March 1, will be felt by the public. But, the first nationwide impact could be felt Monday as furlough notices are sent out, according to ABC News. On Feb. 28, board members also weighed in about the sequestration, and other budget cuts. "We're fine. We'll weather this just like we weathered …

Yes, Gwinnett Schools Are in Session Friday

The state's largest school system will hold classes today.

It is business as usual for Gwinnett County schools on Friday (January 18). As of 6:20 a.m., the state's largest school system had served no notice that it would close or delay classes because of the possibility of roadway icing. System policy is to wait as late as 6 a.m. the day of classes before deciding whether to cancel. That's a short window for some students, as high schoolers in Peachtree Corners who attend Norcross High start classes at 7:10 a.m. According to the National Weather Service, the worst is over. The early morning temperature Friday was above freezing, the high was expected to reach 53. A complete list of metro Atlanta school closings is available on the WSB-TV website. The Gwinnett system will be closed Monday, January …

Will Friday Be a Snow Day for Gwinnett County Schools?

Snow, sleet and black ice are possible. Like others, GCPS officials are monitoring the situation.

Peachtree Corners and Gwinnett parents, be forewarned. It could be a last-minute decision early Friday (January 18) before Gwinnett County school officials decide whether to cancel classes for that day. As of now, classes are still on for Friday, according to Gwinnett Schools' spokesperson Jorge Quintana. He added that the policy for the system, which has more than 160,000 students, is to wait as late as 6 a.m. on the given day before deciding whether to postpone classes for that day. And given the nature of the current weather forecasts, it likely will be a last-minute decision. The National Weather service has talked of the possibility of snow and black ice late Thursday and into early Friday. Black ice is roadway ice from residual …

EmpowerED Georgia Supports Local and State Charter Schools, Co-Founder Says

But it opposes the amendment creating a state Charter Schools Commission.

EmpowerED Georgia is reassured to have the attention of the Georgia Charter School Association. We can only view a lack of a detailed rebuttal from Mr. Lewis as a verification of the concerns we highlighted in our “Myths” piece.  Mr. Lewis is incorrect in his assertion that EmpowerED Georgia does not support charter schools. We support the authorization of both local and state charter schools.  EmpowerED Georgia’s Charter Schools Blueprint addresses the concerns we expressed in our “Myths” piece and previous pieces.  We support the establishment of an effective system of charter schools that serve all students in the state and will be focusing our efforts in promoting the reforms in our Blueprint up until, and beyond the vote on November …
