Gwinnett Schools Will Face Off For State Championship Title

It may seem unusual for two Gwinnett teams to play for a state championship — like Saturday's matchup between Norcross and North Gwinnett in the Class AAAAAA Girls Basketball final — but it's happened 28 times before.

We all know Gwinnett County is pretty competitive in Georgia high school sports. Just how competitive? All-time, Gwinnett schools have won or shared 311 Georgia High School Association sports championships, including the boys basketball title won by Dacula in 1938 and 10 more already won this school year. That's not a misprint. Even more telling is how many times county teams have squared off for the big trophy. When North Gwinnett and Norcross high schools meet Saturday for the GHSA Class AAAAAA girls basketball championship, it will be the 29th All-Gwinnett final in state history. That's not a misprint, either. Crunching the available data in the GHSA archives, here's a historical list of the championship matchups between Gwinnett …

GHSA Approves New 6A Classification

The state's high school governing body overwhelmingly rejected the controversial 4/8 plan that would have crowned eight state champions in each sport.

MACON -- Georgia high schools will crown six state champions in each sport next year as the state moves from a Class AAAAA to Class AAAAAA system. By a vote of 26-24, the Georgia High School Association Executive Committee Tuesday (May 10) approved the six classification system proposed by former Brookwood High School Athletic Director Dave Hunter. That vote came shortly after the committee overwhelmingly rejected the controversial 4/8 proposal advanced by Executive Committee Chairman Stan Ethridge of Savannah. That vote was surprisingly lopsided with 35 of the 50 members opposed. The 4/8 system would have divided Georgia high schools into four classifications for the regular season and subdivided them into eight classifications for the …
