Gwinnett BOC OKs Balanced 2012 Budget; No Reserve Funds Needed

Commissioners also make some appointments to a new I-85 advisory panel.

Gwinnett County's elected leaders unanimously approved Tuesday afternoon a $1.3 billion budget for 2012 that does not require the use of reserve funds. Because of about $5 million in reductions identified since the planned budget was announced in November, the county does not need to dip into reserve funds to balance the budget, which was necessary in 2011. Gwinnett BOC Chairman Charlotte Nash issued "a hearty thank you" to county staff that made the final cuts. The budget planning process began with a revenue shortfall of over $30 million. Also Tuesday, commissioners created and made appointments to a Gwinnett County Policy Advisory Committee for the I-85 Alternative Analysis Study. Each of the five commissioners gets one appointment. …

Are Reversible Lanes a Good Idea on I-85?

Lt. Governor Casey Cagle says he’d like to add movable barriers to help the flow of traffic. What do you think?

With the public still reeling from the HOT lane project on I-85, Lt. Governor Casey Cagle has brought a new idea to the table: creating “reversible” lanes that widen one part of the highway during the I-85 commute. The Gwinnett Daily Post reports that the “grandiose” idea may be even more real the earlier thought, with county officials saying that the reversible lanes have been discussed by an advisory group whose report could be ready as early as March.  The idea is to add movable barriers that would change some northbound lanes into southbound lanes in the morning, and vice versa in the afternoon.  Some say they are all for any measure that would improve commutes—and have commended the idea for its creativity.  Others have said it is …

It should be part of any comprehensive solution, but transit's no more a magic bullet than just constructing more lanes. Transit would be a better option if commuters didn't have to navigate among a dozen different agencies and schedules, while trying to make multiple connections and transfers. And it's only worthwhile if the destination you want to go to is served. There are far too many routes …   more ›

I-85 Express Toll Lanes Set To Go Live Oct. 1

Do you have your Peach Pass yet? Get it online or in one of the two Gwinnett locations.

With the preparation almost complete, the I-85 Express Lanes are set to begin official operations Oct. 1. This is, however, contingent on weather conditions and successful testing of the equipment, according to officials from the State Road and Tollway Authority (SRTA). “The opening of the I-85 Express Lanes will represent a new era in transportation innovation,” said Dr. Gena L. Evans, executive director of SRTA.  “This all-electronic commuting choice gives registered Peach Pass customers access to a more reliable travel option in the I-85 corridor. The Express Lanes concept has been proven successful in eight other cities, and we are excited about its ability to positively impact I-85 traffic and keep Metro Atlantans moving.” Motorists …

Delays Expected This Weekend on I-85

Resurfacing and striping work will close lanes on SR 316 all weekend.

Georgia DOT road work on S.R. 316 is expected to back up traffic on I-85 this weekend.  The work is expected to begin on Friday, June 3 at 9 p.m. and continue until Monday, June 6 at 5 a.m. One or two lanes of 316 eastbound from I-85 to Sugarloaf Parkway will be closed during that time, with bottlenecks expected on SR 316 and 85, according to the DOT.  Old asphalt will be remove  and replaced and lanes will be striped as part of the work. Crews will also extend the outside lane at Sugarloaf Parkway to create more room for merging traffic.  For more information about road work and traffic, call 511 or go to 511ga.org.

I-85 Road Work Continues

HOV to HOT lane conversion underway.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is currently converting the existing High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes on I-85 to High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes. The conversion is expected to be completed this fall according to officials with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). The project will result in lane closures in DeKalb and Gwinnett counties as weather permits. This week, daytime work will result in the closure of the HOV lane along the median wall in one or two locations. Work hours are from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the northbound lanes and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the southbound lanes. This week, road work is planned as follows: Weather permitting, north and southbound HOV lane closures are planned for Tuesday and …
