The extension would take the lanes from Old Peachtree Road to Hamilton Mill Road. Share your thoughts.
Attention, Gwinnett commuters. The I-85 HOT lanes may be extended another 10 miles northward soon. According to wsbtv.com, the state Department of Transportation wants to extend the toll lanes from Old Peachtree Road near Suwanee to Hamilton Mill Road, in the Dacula and Buford areas. Two public hearings will be held in March, one in Gwinnett, for DOT officials to present their plans, according to the report. The work could begin in 2014 and be completed in three years. "The design work proposal is under way that would pick up the express lane that currently ends at Old Peachtree," GDOT spokesperson Teri Pope told WSB. "The great thing about this project is that it’s new construction. We'll be adding that express lane. It will not take …

According to a press release at Peachpass.com, the State Road and Tollway Authority now has a mobile application that allows Peach Pass customers to change their toll mode and check their account balance in seconds. However, users are cautioned not to use it while in transit. In fact, when accessed a flash screen asks whether the user is driving. If the affirmative option is chosen, the application automatically shuts down. The free “Peach Pass GO!” app can be downloaded from the iTunes App store and the Android Market. “We’re extremely pleased and excited to provide our customers with this new and convenient way of accessing their Peach Pass account and changing their toll mode,” said SRTA Executive Director Gena L. Evans. “Now changing…

The State Road and Tollway Authority announced it has reduced the cost of driving on the I-85 Express Lanes. Instead of paying between 10-90 cents per mile depending on traffic flow, drivers will pay between 1-90 cents per mile. So now when the traffic flow is light, it will cost you less to drive in the toll lanes. According to a news release on the Peach Pass website, this went into immediate effect when passed by the SRTA Board on Friday. “We are pleased to institute this operational improvement for our customers,” SRTA Executive Director Gena L. Evans said in the release. “Now motorists using the Express Lanes during off peak hours could pay as low as 16 cents for the full distance of an Express Lanes trip.” Rates given as typical …

A Lawrenceville man made it his mission to put the brakes on the new HOT Lane on I-85.
Howard Rodgers is tired of traffic. He believed the newly opened HOT Lane on I-85 would ease his commute from Lawrenceville to Atlanta. Instead, he says his commute has doubled. “It’s gone from taking me 45 minutes in each direction to get home, to over an hour and a half, two hours each commute.” So Rodgers started a grassroots campaign to put the brakes on the HOT Lane. On Sunday, Rodgers and his family—who are also tired of the commute—set up camp outside of the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center. They were asking other commuters who were fed up with the HOT Lane to sign a petition. Although “Stop the HOT Lane” only received a few dozen sign-ups in that day, according to the group’s website, more than 1,100 people have given …

Sunday, October 2, 2011
At the stroke of midnight Saturday, the HOT lane on I-85 officially opened to traffic. The High Occupancy Toll, or HOT, lane goes from just south of I-285 at Chamblee Tucker Road to Old Peachtree Road. All drivers must now have a Peach Pass and most will pay a fee of 10 to 90 cents per mile. That number will be based upon congestion and distance if they have less than three people in their vehicle. There are a few exceptions, such as Alternative Fuel Vehicles with the proper plates, emergency vehicles and motorcycles. WSB-TV's Kerry Kavanaugh tells drivers what they can expect on the ride in the HOT Lane. CBS Atlanta's Renee Starsyk talked to commuters at Discover Mills who say their commute will now be longer because of the HOT Lane. …

Testing of toll lane equipment continues this week as part of the conversion of the existing High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes on I-85 to High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes. The State Road and Tollway Authority (SRTA) will conduct nightly tests until testing is complete. Toll lane signs may display “TEST A” or “TEST B” or a combination of letters, symbols and/or numbers throughout the testing period. As part of the testing, simulated toll rates will be displayed on the green and white toll signs between the hours of 12 a.m. and 5 a.m. The toll lanes are not officially open at this time and no tolls will be charged during the testing period. During this time, motorists will see the following message displayed on signs along the interstate: “…

Commuters can order a Peach Pass in advance of I-85 HOV lanes converting to HOT toll lanes.
Attention Peachtree Corners and Berkeley Lake commuters: The conversion of the express lanes on Interstate 85 to toll lanes is just a few weeks away. When the new HOT lanes open, single- and double-occupant commuter vehicles may gain access to the lane if they pay a variable toll based on current traffic conditions. All vehicles entering the lane must use a Peach Pass even if the trip does not require a toll. (The new HOT lanes are expected to open between Sept. 24 and Oct. 1, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.) Registration for a Peach Pass is now open at www.peachpass.com or by calling 1-855-PCH-PASS (724-7277). Some important things to know before registering: More information is available in the Peach Pass FAQs. …

Planning to use the high occupancy toll (HOT) lanes later this year? Motorists intending to travel in what are currently HOV (high occupancy vehicle) lanes may now register for the Peach Pass -- a small electronic sticker that will be used to bill motorists for their time in the HOT lane. For the past several months, the Georgia Department of Transportation has been working to convert the HOV lanes to HOT lanes. The $11.7 million project includes the installation of tolling technology and equipment, new signs and new sign structures along 16 miles of I-85 express lanes in Gwinnett and DeKalb counties. The HOT lanes will run along I-85 between Shallowford Road and Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road and along State Route 316 between I-85 and …

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just have the computer system send over a copy of the prices so you can quickly log on (possibly with an iPhone / Android app?) and see the prices? Do we really need to be spending the money for 4 cameras and the bandwidth for streaming video media?   more ›
