It's time for Peachtree Corners city leaders and its citizens to look ahead 20 years into the future and create a plan to get there.
We all make plans for our future, and the City of Peachtree Corners must also prepare. As part of a state requirement, the city is tasked with creating a Comprehensive Plan which is a written plan for its future and where the city wants to be in the next 20 years. At the Peachtree Corners City Council meeting Tuesday those in attendance heard an overview of what is included, its purpose and the importance of community input in developing the plan. "It's a road map to the future," said Michelle Alexander, who is with Pond & Co. an engineering firm located in Peachtree Corners that has been selected to help with the process. The private school's request for a special use permit was approved by a vote of 4-3. The Peachtree Corners City Council also weighed in on a number of other agenda items.
Updated: 12:15 p.m. Dec. 20. At Tuesday's Peachtree Corners City Council meeting city leaders several requests for Special Use Permits and one request for a change in conditions. City Council approved Wesleyan School's request to expand its athletic fields and tennis courts onto property currently zoned for residential use. The school's request was passed by a vote of 4-3. Council members Weare Gratwick, Jay Lowe and Lorri Christopher voted against, said Community Development Director Diana Wheeler in an email. Presentations from Wesleyan School and two Buford Highway businesses were on the agenda at the first City Council meeting in the new City Hall. And the mayor announced City Hall now has a phone number.
There was an air of excitement as everyone filed it to take their seats at Tuesday night's City Council meeting - this was the first to be held in the new City Hall. The council had been meeting at the YMCA since May. In August a building was selected but the space needed painting, carpeting, furniture and some renovations before it was ready. After eight months of meeting at various venues, the Peachtree Corners City Council will hold its first meeting in its new headquarters in Technology Park. The meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Dec. 4 at City Hall located 147 Technology Parkway. Don't know where City Hall is? Look for the small blue signs to help you find your way.
It's been five months since Peachtree Corners incorporated on July 1, 2012 and city leaders and staff have been working steadily at getting City Hall ready to open. That day is just about here. On Tuesday, Dec. 4, the first City Council meeting will be held in the new City Hall building at 7:30 p.m, though it will be next week before City Hall is open and functioning for Peachtree Corners residents. "We're real close to being ready to open," said City Manager Julian Jackson. "By Monday [Dec. 10] we should be fully operational." A long-time local resident was hired for the city clerk position which rounds out the three full-time employees for the new city.
Peachtree Corners Mayor and City Council recently announced that it has hired a City Clerk. The recent hire now completes the three key employees who will handle the day to day operations of the city. Kym Chereck, a 16-year resident of Chattahoochee Station in Peachtree Corners, was selected to fill the City Clerk position. Chereck has for the past 11 years worked as the Recording Secretary for the City of Alpharetta. She officially begins her new job as City Clerk for Peachtree Corners on Monday, Dec. 3. "We are very pleased to announce that we have offered Kym the position of City Clerk," said Mayor Mike Mason. The date of this Special Called Meeting had added significance; it was exactly a year ago that voters approved the referendum to form the new city of Peachtree Corners.
Thursday's City Council meeting was an anniversary of sorts for Gwinnett's newest city - it was just one year ago (Nov. 8, 2011) that the majority of Peachtree Corners residents voted in favor of the referendum to incorporate as a city.
