Each year our Sanders Buckhead YMCA organizes an Association wide staff field day. This event is full of fun and teamwork and a continual reminder to put a little play into our work days. The Peachtree Corners YMCA offers a unique way to get a workout - and stay cool in the process.
Have you checked out the Fowler YMCA pool? It's an ideal way to get in shape and keep your cool at the same time. You don't have to be a swimmer or get your hair wet or put your face in the water to participate in water fitness classes at the Y. It is a refreshing change to sweating on land, and the health benefits have been proven by water exercise research. Water fitness is adaptable to almost every exerciser, from the most fit to those who may have difficulty moving freely on land. Commonly called "water aerobics," aquatic fitness classes include one-hour morning classes on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 9:00 a.m. and Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. which are taught by YMCA certified water instructors. Early risers …

The local Y offers a variety of personal and group fitness activities. And on March 25 the Peachtree Corners facility is offering health screening tests.
One of the ways the YMCA brings health care into our communities is through health screenings, which provide convenient, easy access to a variety of common screening tests for numerous medical conditions and overall health. Health screenings can detect many medical conditions at an early stage before symptoms are present. Early detection and treatment can improve your quality of life and, in many cases, even save your life. On March 25 from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., Fowler YMCA will host HealthCheck Services, Inc. who will provide a screening service for a convenient, reliable, and low cost way to check your health. Screening costs start at $40. At the time of the screening, HealthCheck will obtain a small blood sample from you. The sample is …

A heart attack followed by kidney failure didn't stop this Peachtree Corners school teacher who walked her way back to health at the YMCA.
Do you know Susan Wise? For 19 years she was a teacher at Simpson Elementary School. She lives in Peachtree Corners and has a son and daughter-in-law and a cute little 1-year-old grandson. Susan's Y story starts in 2006 when she had a heart attack caused by congestive heart failure. She underwent a quadruple bypass and after her heart attack, her doctors recommended that she begin walking. She joined the Fowler YMCA and began by walking the track then the treadmills. She lost 30 pounds and began to feel better. Unfortunately her kidneys were damaged by her heart problems. She was told her health would never improve and she was put on the wait list for a transplant and examined monthly to be sure she didn't need dialysis. Susan's heart had …

"Pickleball is the most, fun, addictive game you can play," says one new Pickleball player. Similar to tennis, it's quickly becoming a favorite at Fowler YMCA.
The fast-growing sport of Pickleball is gaining momentum in popularity at Fowler YMCA in Peachtree Corners by players of all ages. Similar to tennis, Pickleball is played on a hard floor court with a three-foot net between the players. However, instead of a tennis ball and racket, Pickleball is played with wiffle balls and wooden paddles. The Pickleball scene at the Y is both lively and social. The players take their fair turns on the court and enjoy cheering one another on whhile waiting to play. Here’s what a few Pickleball enthusiasts said about the game: According to the USA Pickleball Association, the game was invented in 1965 by a congressman and his friends wanting a game their families could play on an old badminton court. …

By Brian Morgan Every life has a story and this is mine. I grew up on the rough side of Detroit but was fortunate to have great parents and a YMCA nearby where I played basketball. I went to Ashland University in Ohio on a basketball scholarship, played in a National Championship, and then after college played semi-pro for Global Basketball Association, needless to say I was an athlete. But on May 17, 2011, I experienced a severe stroke in the right hemisphere of my brain, I was 41 years old. I'd just gotten home from work and was talking with my wife about our two sons. When all of a sudden my head felt like it was exploding; as if it was on fire. I tried to move but my body was very weak and starting to droop, the pain was …
