Pending legislation gives Berkeley Lake 161 businesses that were originally to be part of the new city of Peachtree Corners.
Before Peachtree Corners new mayor and council are even seated legislation has been introduced that will carve out portions of what was meant to be part of Peachtree Corners and annex it into the City of Berkeley Lake. State Rep. Tom Rice (Dist. 51) will introduce House Bill 956 on Monday, Feb. 27, which will annex 161 properties that were to be a part of Peachtree Corners into the City of Berkeley Lake. It's all part of a settlement of sorts between the neighboring cities. Since May 11, 2011 when Gov. Nathan Deal signed legislation allowing Peachtree Corners voters to decide by referendum vote on cityhood, the surrounding cities of Norcross, Duluth and Berkeley Lake began contacting businesses adjacent to their borders about annexation. …

Not sure in which voting district you belong?
Peachtree Corners citizens will head to the polls for the first time on March 6, 2012 to elect six city council members to represent the approximately 38,000 residents of Gwinnett County's newest city. Mike Mason, the candidate for Mayor, is running unopposed. The new city is divided up into three voting districts, 1, 2 and 3. Those districts are determined by your residential address. To help anyone who is unsure of which district they belong in, we've attached the official map of the three districts. This is the official map which was provided by the State of Georgia Reapportionment Office and was filed with the city's charter when H.B. 396 was signed by Gov. Nathan Deal. A search on YouTube is likely to turn up any number of videos, and today we found a Peachtree Corners resident named Allie who broke out in song at the news that the Nov. 8 referendum had passed. She even has written a special piece to commemorate the big event. But before sitting down to strum her guitar and put words to music she had a few humorous observations on what would happen should the referendum not pass. If you know Allie, let her know we've posted her video on Peachtree Corners Patch so we can give her proper credit. And let us know what you think of her video. Just use the comment box below. Thanks for listening.

By Gay Shook The city of Peachtree Corners, which was newly voted into existence on Nov. 8, 2011, has a heavy hitter running to be its first mayor. Mike Mason, 61, was one of the founders of the United Peachtree Corners Civic Association (UPCCA) in 1993 and has been significantly involved with the organization since that time, serving as its president off and on through the years and currently, through the cityhood initiative. UPCCA was established initially to address land use issues in the area, but has evolved over time into functioning as the de facto government of unincorporated Peachtree Corners, providing a reasoned voice for a broader range of community issues. In his professional life, Mason, a CPA, is vice president and CFO of …

Peachtree Corners made the TV news lately when a reporter from WSBT-TV Channel 2 News reported on the upcoming referendum vote Nov. 8. Channel 2’s Craig Lucie spent Monday evening in the community after noticing the "Peachtree Corners Yes" signs sprinkled throughout and spoke with citizens and business owners. The majority the TV reporter spoke with were in favor of cityhood for their community, one business owner, who did not want his name mentioned, spoke out against the referendum. City leaders wooing adjacent industrial park businesses.
Peachtree Corners' bid for cityhood has created a scramble for surrounding cities to annex in nearby businesses before the referendum vote on Nov. 8. Berkeley Lake leaders would like to annex in an adjacent industrial area which is currently within the proposed Peachtree Corners city borders. The city recently annexed 27 businesses along Peachtree Industrial Boulevard's west side and is interested in the 100+ businesses on the east side as well. Berkeley Lake, which is primarily made up of residential properties, had passed a resolution in 2009 to begin looking for opportunities to annex in commercial properties in an effort to diversity its tax base. Representatives of Berkeley Lake have been meeting with a number of those businesses to …

Editor's note: The opinions expressed in this letter are not necessarily those of Peachtree Corners Patch. We welcome your response. Post comments in the comment box at the end of Byron Gilbert's letter. Peachtree Corners: Sleepy residents are waking up Why are we being forced to choose if we want to be a city or not? No one came to my door with a petition to ask me for my opinion. How about you? We voted the idea down in 2005. There has never been a referendum or survey to support such an idea. There has never been an outcry from the oppressed, ignored residents crying out to be free of the county tyranny! This November 1, 2011, the residents of Peachtree Corners and some areas that one would consider Doraville or Duluth ZIP codes, …

The UPCCA said, "the formation of Peachtree Corners City will give us the ability to control our destiny." Control is a dangerous word. This is a wake up call for Peachtree Corner residents. Demand a transparent gov't. If you don't participate, you loose. Elliott Brack wrote a very good article concerning this "property swap business" that has created such hoopla.
