It's the YMCA's Favorite New Sport - Pickleball

"Pickleball is the most, fun, addictive game you can play," says one new Pickleball player. Similar to tennis, it's quickly becoming a favorite at Fowler YMCA.

The fast-growing sport of Pickleball is gaining momentum in popularity at Fowler YMCA in Peachtree Corners by players of all ages. Similar to tennis, Pickleball is played on a hard floor court with a three-foot net between the players. However, instead of a tennis ball and racket, Pickleball is played with wiffle balls and wooden paddles. The Pickleball scene at the Y is both lively and social. The players take their fair turns on the court and enjoy cheering one another on whhile waiting to play.   Here’s what a few Pickleball enthusiasts said about the game:   According to the USA Pickleball Association, the game was invented in 1965 by a congressman and his friends wanting a game their families could play on an old badminton court.   …

Pickleball – Funny Name, Fun Sport

It's a little like ping pong and a little like tennis and you can learn to play the game at the Peachtree Corners YMCA.

What’s in a name? The answer could be serious or silly; in this case it’s silly but fun! The game was invented in 1965 by Washington State congressman Joel Pritchard and his friend Bill Bell. Surprisingly, Pickleball is a very literal name for the game. The ball that is used is a plastic perforated ball about twice the size of ping pong balls, and in fact, a ball enjoyed by Pickles, the congressman’s cocker spaniel. As the game was played whenever a wayward shot was made, Pickles ran to reclaim his possession, picking up the ball and running with it! It's a game that's a mix of table tennis, paddle tennis, badminton and tennis and is becoming one of the fastest growing sports in the country.

Introduced in 1965 in Seattle, Washington, Pickleball has gained in popularity as it spread across the country. It's played on a smaller court, easy to learn and fun for families, active adults and seniors. During the Gwinnett Senior Gold Games currently underway a demonstration and clinic has been set up to introduce you to the sport. Following are the details.
