A Common-Sense Step: Middle Class Tax Cuts First

A reader responds to Rep. Rob Woodall letter on the fiscal cliff.

Submitted by Jason Pfeifle, Field Organizer, Georgia Fair Share The fiscal cliff is quickly approaching, and itʼs time for our elected officials to get something done. In a recent opinion piece in Peachtree Corners Patch, Rep. Rob Woodall called for a comprehensive solution to the pending fiscal cliff and outlined what he thinks that solution should look like: reduced government spending, increased revenue through the closing of tax loopholes, and no changes to current tax rates. But, if Rep. Woodall is so concerned about keeping tax rates the same, then why hasnʼt he pushed for the passage of the Senateʼs bill to extend the middle class tax cuts? As I believe Rep. Woodall would acknowledge, extending tax cuts for 98 percent of Americans …

Does Washington Have a Spending Problem or a Revenue Problem?

Depending on your opinion, what programs would you be prepared to cut, or what percentage of your income would you be prepared to give in taxes, to fix the problem?

The "fiscal cliff" negotiations are heating up and congress can’t agree on whether Washington has a spending problem or a revenue problem. Nor can the American people or, in many instances, even economist agree. In an article on Marketplace.org, headed up “Washington has a spending problem not a revenue problem,” the argument is made that you can’t keep spending and just raising taxes to meet the outflow of money. The best way to fix the country’s deficit problem is to gut spending. In a story in the Daily Kos, Joan McCarter looks at it from the other side in an article titled, “We have a revenue problem, not a spending problem.” In the story, McCarter shows the loss in revenue as a result of the Bush tax cuts and the economic downturn in …

Obama Soliciting Help From Citizens to Solve 'Fiscal Cliff'

The president is taking him message straight to the citizens via social media. Is he playing fair?

We've been inundated with news and commentary about President Barack Obama and Congress' struggle to find a point of compromise on the looming "fiscal cliff" issue. In a recent speech the president urges everyone to send a tweet to their congressmen to let them know they favor his middle class income tax cut program. And he took to Twitter on Monday to answer tweets from citizens with questions on his plan. Obama is the first president to use the social media to reach the masses. His latest message is posted on a website, Barack Obama, What Does $2,000 Mean to You. It's a simple question - he invites you to write back with a short message on the impact of an extra two grand would mean in your pocket rather than the government's coffers. …

The problem isnt that he using social media to spread his message, the problem is he has no message! A president is supposed to lead. He should be in a conference room in the White House with leaders from the House and Senate hashing out a deal. He makes a proposal, they counter. In the end they all meet in what passes for the middle. This guy says I want this, this and that and then he goes off …   more ›

Is It Time For Congress To Compromise to Avoid Going Over the ‘Fiscal Cliff?’

Lawmakers have Dec. 31 deadline to prevent start of automatic tax hikes and budget cuts.

After kicking the can down the road to avoid making hard choices in the face of an election, lawmakers now have just a few weeks to face financial reality for the American people. Experts may debate whether it’s a “fiscal cliff” or a gentle slope, but everyone seems to agree that dealing with the deficit and expiration of Bush-era tax cuts is a must. (See Wall Street Journal video explainer.) Congress set their own deadline to do so of Dec. 31, 2012, conveniently after the election. But with another election at least two years away, it's now time to do something about it. Until now, each Party has blamed the other for the footdragging, but all indications are that the American people are tired of the deadlock in Washington. They're ready …

City Says Obama Owes $35K For Security

Newport Beach, California wants to be reimbursed for police costs during the president's campaign stop in Corona del Mar and has sent the president a bill which he's yet to pay.

NEWPORT BEACH, CA -- Will Newport Beach have to send a collections agent to the White House? Earlier this year, the city mailed President Barack Obama an invoice for $35,043 to cover security costs it says were incurred during his February visit to a breakfast fundraiser in Corona del Mar. The tab was due June 9, but no payment ever landed. So, this week, a past-due notice will be sent, city officials said. "The city’s normal billing process is to send past-due notices 30 days after the original due date, then again at 60 days," city spokeswoman Mary Locey said. "If no payment is received 90 days after the original due date, the matter is sent to collections." Don't hold your breath, Newport Beach. Obama's campaign has similar bills piling…
