You're Never Too Old To Get In The Game

Opportunities abound for older adults at the Peachtree Corners YMCA, from exercise to social activities.

You are never too old to try new things - whether it's learning a new skill, discovering a new hobby or making new friends. As we age, it is increasingly important to stay active and exercise regularly. At Fowler YMCA, older adults can take advantage of wellness programs designed especially for them, like yoga, water exercise, Tai Chi, walking clubs and strength training.   But, the fun doesn't stop there, in addition to exercise wellness programs, the Y offers a range of lifelong learning opportunities and social activities to keep older adults healthy, happy and connected to the community.   "Life is so much more rewarding and fun when we find people and things that inspire us," said Glynda Jolley, an active senior member at Fowler Y. …

Plenty of Fun at YMCA Summer Camps

It's not too late to sign up for one of the Summer Camps at the Peachtree Corners Y.

At the YMCA Summer Camp is all about developing the camper and filling your child's day with fun, character-developing experiences.   Campers develop new friendships while gaining a sense of independence. With activities like swimming, sports, gymnastics, cheerleading, nature and environmental awareness, arts and crafts, math and science, (just to name a few of the Y's specialty camps) campers try things outside of their norm. Activity and play is just the beginning. Camp Leaders create an environment where campers learn the importance of healthy choices and active lifestyles while developing teamwork and leadership skills. Both camps share one thing: they’re a fun and happy place to enjoy the summer.  It’s not too late to sign your child …

The Evolution of a Spin-A-Thon

The YMCA's annual fundraiser has grown since its inception 12 yearrs ago and now supports over 700 families in the community.

As the Fowler YMCA prepares for its annual Spin-A-Thon event this writer decided to explore how an event of this magnitude actually gets rolling (pardon the pun!). The first two Spin-A-Thon events were held in portable trailers that housed the Y’s “new” cycle classes in 1998-99 and the focus was on generating enough money to buy stereo equipment.   In 2000, the event officially became a fundraiser for the YMCA’s annual campaign, providing financial support to over 700 families in our community.   Each of the subsequent Spin-A-Thon events has grown and morphed, but one thing has never changed - each event has been organized by Fowler YMCA cycling instructors. Bruce Watson, a former Fowler YMCA instructor, holds the record of 12 consecutive…

The Peachtree Corners Rose That Blooms For Charity

The Cherokee Rose Civic Association, a local charity fundraising group, is finding needs close to home.

When a group of 19 ladies from the Peachtree Corners area decided to form a charity organization, the name nearly presented itself. As many of them are gardeners by avocation, including one Master Gardener, the Official Flower of the State of Georgia, the Cherokee Rose, noted for its beauty as well as its survival skills, seemed like a natural. Thus the Cherokee Rose Civic Association was born. Likewise, the first opportunity for the group presented itself, or rather, herself, in short order. A number of the Cherokee Rose team met at the Robert D. Fowler YMCA, where all were familiar with Jan Nance, a beloved staple of the Y for the past 12 years. After several years as a YMCA member, Jan ascended to water aerobics instructor in 2008. In …

Growing Young Minds at Fowler Y’s Preschool

Peachtree Corners facility is offering free story time for pre-school children and their parents this Thursday from noon to 1 p.m.

On Thursday, Sept. 1, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., Fowler YMCA’s Preschool invites parents and their 2 to 5 year olds to come to a free story time hour and see the class.  The Y’s Preschool program, for children ages 2 to 5, creates a special community that gives families the opportunity to learn, play, grow and garden together.     "The preschools love going to the Y garden,” said Debbie Sutton, Executive Director.  “They look for bugs, and look to see what is growing, and if anything is ready to harvest. They are learning that plants need water, sunshine, dirt and lots of love – just like us."  The YMCA is located at 5600 W. Jones Bridge Road in Peachtree Corners, 30092.
