The Peachtree Corners Rotary Club was honored to have the Lieutenant Governor speak at its Monday luncheon meeting.
Georgia's 11th Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle was the guest speaker at the Peachtree Corners Rotary Club luncheon meeting on Monday. Introducing the Lieutenant Governor was Senator Curt Thompson (Dist. 5). "Casey Cagle is committed to education in Georgia. He helped create the E-SPLOST system and has been a champion for the charter school system," said Thompson. Cagle, a Gainesville native, made history in 2006 by becoming the first Republican elected to the state's second highest office and was re-elected for a second term. "We as citizens have experienced some economic challenging times recently," said Cagle. "At the state level we've felt it too. Peachtree Corners automobile aficionados, here's your chance to take a trip back in time. With the cooperation of the City of Duluth, the Rotary Club of Duluth will host its First Annual Car Show Saturday, April 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. along the square (adjacent to the Town Green) in historic downtown Duluth. Proceeds from the event will benefit Operation One Voice, a Duluth-based non-profit organization that assists children and families of fallen Special Operations Forces. Rachel Newman, a third grader in Ms. Eady's class was recognized this week by the Peachtree Corners Rotary Club as its Student of the Month.
Each week the Peachtree Corners Rotary Club recognizes a student from the Norcross elementary and middle school cluster. They rotate the schools so each school has a chance to nominate its Student of the Month. This past week the student was from Peachtree Elementary School Rachel Newman from Ms. Eady's third-grade class was presented the following proclamation by Rotarian Robert Mann on Monday, Jan, 7. Elena Domenech, a first grader, was recognized recently by the Peachtree Corners club as its "Student of the Month."
The Peachtree Corners Rotary Club recognizes a student who has done something outstanding whether academically, athletically or through community service. Recently Simpson Elementary School student Elena Domenech, from Mrs. Berrigan's first grade class was recognized as the Rotary Club's Student of the Month. Scott Sikes, the executive director of Shepherd Center Foundation provided information to the club's members and their guests. The Shepherd Center is the nation's largest nonprofit hospital devoted to research, intensive medical care, rehabilitation, and advocacy for people with spinal cord injury and disease, acquired brain injury, Multiple Sclerosis and chronic pain The Shepherd Center Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization created to accept gifts on behalf of Shepherd Center. The local club supports our community schools through programs that include the Norcross High School Interact Club, student of the month recognition awards and others.
The Peachtree Corners Rotary Club was delighted to have principals and councilors from 11 of the community schools who attended our first meeting of 2012. One of the primary objectives is our emphasis on education from the local schools though Ambassadorial Scholarships which have given more than 41,000 men and women the opportunity to study abroad. Our local club puts an emphasis on our neighborhood schools with several programs. A number of our members participate in the mentor program spending time with students after school. The Rotary Club also supports the Norcross High School Interact Club which is a service oriented club. Satya is a respectful, courteous and hardworking student and is a member of Pinckneuyville's Future Problem Solving Team and FIRST Lego League (Robotics). Richard Steele, Gwinnett County Tax Commissioner speaks to the Peachtree Corners Rotary Club
Gwinnett County Tax Commissioner Richard Steele was the guest speaker at the Peachtree Corners Rotary Club's weekly meeting on Monday. Commissioner Steele explained the various aspects of the Tax Commissioner’s office which has basically two functions, property tax collection and automobile tag sales. In 2010 the department served 874,000 customers, 300,000 where property tax customers and 574,000 where customers of the tag offices. Steele said last year the property tax collection constituted 75 percent and tag sales made up 25 percent of the county revenue.
