Gun Control: Residents Rally for Gun Safety

In remembrance of the December shootings in Newtown, Conn., demonstrators asked U.S. Rep. Rob Woodall to support gun safety laws. The demonstration was held at the Gwinnett Justice Administration Center in Lawrenceville, Ga.

A group of concerned citizens stood with signs outside the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center in Lawrenceville Thursday to call for support of reasonable gun safety laws. The rally took place a within a few days of the two-month anniversary of the Dec. 14, 2012 shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Twenty-six people, mostly young children, lost their lives when a gunman opened fire in the school. MoveOn.org sponsored the event urging U.S. Representative Rob Woodall—who’s office is housed in GJAC—to take action on gun safety.  “We ask Representative Woodall to listen to his constituents and stand up for common sense reforms that will reduce gun violence,” said Kathleen Allen in a release. Allen is a mother in …

That's a straw man argument, Bud, but OK if insist on comparing cars to guns let's apply the laws concerning cars to the the laws concerning guns. First, you'll need to get a license to operate a gun. That means you've got to take a written test and practical exam in order to get licensed to operate a gun--just like driving a car. Then you've got to buy liability insurance if you want to own a …   more ›

Large Crowd Turns Out at Gwinnett Gun Show on Saturday

The event at the fairgrounds in Lawrenceville, Ga., continues Sunday.

The continuing national debate on guns played out in a big way Saturday (January 26) in Gwinnett County. There was a large turnout at a gun show at the fairgrounds in Lawrenceville. According to myfoxatlanta.com, the line at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds wrapped around the complex just to get inside. "People are starting to understand that they need to look out for their own safety," gun show vendor Bruce Greenfield said in a video with the Fox5 article. "There's a sense of fear ..." vendor Fred Augat also said in the video. The gun-control debate heated up earlier this month when President Obama proposed a series of gun-control measures. This was done in response to the December 14 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., …

Georgia Schools Chief Backs NRA Proposal for Armed Officers at Schools

A spokesperson for John Barge likes the suggestion for schools.

The suggestion Friday (December 20) of having armed officers at schools as a deterrent to mass shootings found approval from Georgia School Superintendent John Barge. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “Having a school resource officer would certainly be ideal,” Matt Cardoza, director of communications at the Georgia Department of Education, said Friday after a conversation with Barge. “It makes the school a safer place, but the state would have to pick up a significant part of that cost. "Districts aren’t really in a position to pay for more than what they’re already struggling to pay for.” Friday, a National Rifle Association executive called for Congress to foot the bill for armed guards at every school in the country. "The …

When people started using guns to rob banks, we put armed guards in the banks. When people started using guns to hijack airplanes, we put armed guards and metal detectors in airports. If you go to a ballgame at the Dome there are armed guards and you get wanded before you get to the door. Yet you send your defenseless kids to a school and somehow expect them to be safe because there is a sign in …   more ›

Selling Guns in Peachtree Corners

The city has two stores that sell firearms, Dick's Sporting Goods store and Norcross Gun Club and Range. Will tighter gun controls ensure our safety?

The Sandy Hook shooting deaths have everyone on edge and wondering just how safe they - and their children - really are. The focus naturally turns to guns, and how to keep weapons from the hands of those who would kill the innocent and unarmed. And it has put those who sell guns in the spotlight. Dick's Sporting Goods, which has over 500 stores in 44 states including Peachtree Corners, sells rifles, shotguns and ammunition. Shortly after the Friday shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the company made an announcement that "out of respect for the victims and their families," it would remove all guns from sale and from display at its store nearest to Newtown, Conn. "The company also made the decision to pull sporting rifles from all …

Mar. Silly concerns such as the kick of the gun I am simply not going to be able to discuss logically or objectively. You have obviously made up your mind that it is the gun that is at fault and that you are against ALL guns (while you initially WRONGLY were only against automatic weapons). All of my guns have enough of a kick that requires reaiming. Even my .22. This, as I said, is simply a …   more ›

Newtown School Shootings: Patch Contributors Respond

Patch bloggers and commentators throughout Northeast Georgia offer their thoughts to help us sort through last week's catastrophe.

The shootings in Newtown, Connecticut last week spread grief and turmoil across the country, including to towns and neighborhoods throughout Gwinnett County and Northeast Georgia. Many of Patch's contributors have responded with thoughtful and thought-provoking posts to continue the local conversation about what the mass murder of children and their teachers means, and how we should respond. Here is a glimpse at some of their blogs and opinion pieces, in case you missed them: Jason Books on losing a child: You never get used to standing over your child's grave. Not when it's open, waiting on the coffin to be lowered. Not when the first shovel full of dirt hits the top of the vault. Not when the last shovel full of dirt gets patted into …

Dick's Sporting Goods Suspends Sale of Some Guns

The national chain, with three locations in Gwinnett including one in Peachtree Corners, made the decision after Friday's school massacre in Newtown, Connecticut.

Dick's Sporting Goods, with Gwinnett-area locations in Buford, Peachtree Corners and Loganville, has stopped selling some semi-automatic rifles to show respect for the victims in last week's school shooting in Connecticut, CNN reports. It's not known when the stores will return to selling guns in the category of "modern sporting rifles," CNN says. The shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, which killed 20 children and six adults, has re-ignited a national debate about gun control. Local Patch bloggers have also weighed in, both for and against new regulation. What do you think? Should more stores suspend sales of semi-automatic rifles? Tell us in the comments below.

My guess is Dick's is doing the same as other merchants by suspending sales until demand pushes the prices way up. A close check of these type shootings will show that the guns used were usually stolen or purchased over time so as not raise suspicion. Exactly are "modern sporting rifles"? Are they autoloaders, like the AR15 or an autoloader like the Remington Model 8 that was made prior to World …   more ›
