Some have said it was an attempt to aid President Barack Obama in his reelection bid. According to a story in Reuters, however, a TV executive rejected the claims. Although ackowledging that the proximity of the election was not lost on them, David Lyle, chief executive of National Georgraphic Channel, told Reuters that it was shown because it was thought to be of interest to viewers.
