The National Weather Service says the rough weather is possible Wednesday morning into the afternoon.
The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has issued a hazardous weather outlook for Wednesday for the possibility of severe weather in north Georgia, including Peachtree Corners and Gwinnett County. Severe thunderstorms and isolated tornadoes are possible, says the weather service, along with damaging winds and rainfall in excess of one inch. The timing puts the active weather in this part of the state beween 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesday. A house fire was reported in Lawrenceville and downed trees were reported in Lawrenceville and Lilburn on Wednesday evening as a result of Wednesday's storm. No severe incidents were reported in Peachtree Corners by Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services. -- A lightning strike caused a house fire in the 700 block of Continental Drive in Lawrenceville. A neighbor reported seeing lightning strike the house and saw smoke and fire coming from the house moments later, Fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said in a media release. The fire caused extensive damage to the home and sent smoke and heat throughout. There also was damage to a metal fence in the yard. Weather predictions for Fathers Day already have the possibility of outdoor activities being interrupted by an isolated thundershower. According to the National Weather Service, lightning is a major cause of storm related deaths in the U.S. In the 30-year period 1980-2009, the U.S. averaged 55 reported lightning fatalities a year, but officials believe those figures are under reported and it is closer to 70 deaths a year. With only about 10 percent of people struck by lightning dying, 90 percent of those struck are left with various degrees of disability.
