Report Shows Social Media Use Increasing in U.S.

Billions of hours monthly are spent on such sites as Facebook and Pinterest.

Are you spending more time on social media sites these days? You're not alone. According to the Los Angeles Times, a Nielsen report shows that in July 2012, U.S. users spent the equivalent of 2 billion hours on sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. That's an increase of 36 percent from the same month in 2011. As you might suspect, Facebook, with more than 900 million users, accounts for about half of that time -- which was about 17 percent of the total time spent on computers. The growth of mobile social media apps was strong, also. The report said we spend one-third of social media time on mobile, up 76 percent from July 2011. Another finding was that more than half of adults age 25-34 use social media at work, tops of any age …

Over-Sharing Parents, Beware

Sites mock parents who share too much information about their kids on Facebook.

It's super exciting that your little toddler piddled in the potty for the first time and you want to share photographic evidence of the moment with all of your friends on Facebook. Well, you might want to reconsider before you hit the "share" button.  There are a slew of websites these days dedicated to informing over-sharing parents that their childless friends are over reading about their kid's crap, literally. Take for instance, the blog ST*U, Parents, a submission-based "public service" blog that pokes fun at parents whose Facebook statuses have been hijacked with inane updates about their children. The author of the site, known simply as "B," created the blog in 2009 in response to annoying parental over-share posts that popped up in …

Social Media: Divided by the Sexes

Breaking down the demographics of Social Media usage

Almost 150 million Americans now use at least one social networking site, according to MediaBistro’s Shea Bennett. Women “check-in” much more than men – almost 100 million more visits per month! It’s probably no surprise that Pinterest is predominantly female, but according to the AllTwitter post, 64% of Twitter users are women who lead in log ins with 58% of Facebook and 60% of social gamers. “Men lead the way on Reddit (84 percent), Google+ (71 percent) and LinkedIn (63 percent)." There are more men on LinkedIn than there are women who use LinkedIn, Reddit and Google+ combined. A few more interesting facts: Online MBA brings perspective to other aspects of the demographics of social media users in their celestial illustration that …

Social Media Is Affecting the News Media

News agencies are changing their operations based on evolving consumer uses of digital technology.

News agencies around the world are constantly challenged with finding and keeping consumers of their published content. Content is certainly king, but the business model has been stressed for many organizations over the past decade based on the advancement of technology and changing consumer habits. It’s still about getting the attention of readers, listeners, and watchers. But now, your news source wants you to consume their content through digital media and share it within your friends, family, and professional circles. Consider that the traditional subscription model is based a one-to-one relationship. A consumer subscribes to a publication, and the agency pushes their content to the subscriber at a specified interval. If you want a …

Why You Need To Know About Google+

Google+ is a social-media sharing platform similar to Facebook. But it has some features that you should know about as a personal user and/or a business.

On June 28, 2011, Google announced a new social platform named Google+ (also written as Google Plus or G+).  Most people I know and reviews I’ve read compare the platform to Facebook. The influence of Facebook is apparent from the stream (status updates) to connections (friends) to photo share.  But Google+ has some unique features and a few advantages that I think you’ll want to consider. Google rolled out Google+ initially by invitation only. Once someone was a registered user, they were allowed to invite a limited number of friends to also participate.  This gave Google a controlled ramp-up of users where they could measure usage and make adjustments based on feedback. Then on Sept., 20, Google loosened the enrollment restriction and …
