Sales Tax Support For Peachtree Corners In Question

Power to bring tax revenue to proposed new city may rest with voters.

Voting to create a new City of Peachtree Corners is not likely to usher in more improvement projects supported by sales tax. But another future election opportunity could see tax revenues working closer to home. Right now Gwinnett County shoppers pay an extra one percent on their purchases, which is a voter-approved Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST). The county collects the revenues and shares a percentage with existing municipalities to complete transportation enhancements and other capital projects like parks. But as County Commissioner Lynette Howard explained, the “city lite” model considered for Peachtree Corners will likely preclude SPLOST funds from being allocated specifically for city use. If our commission representative handles this issue as she does the airport issue, buy saying one view in public meetings and voting the opposite, then our views and opinions will again be ignored and we are wasting our time to turn out. Draft of Transportation Project List Approved

Regional Roundtable executive committee reaches agreement on $6.14 billion list of transportation projects.

The executive committee of the Atlanta Regional Transportation Roundtable voted unanimously today to approve a $6.14 billion draft list of transportation projects to be funded by a proposed penny sales tax. Citizens Asked to Weigh in on Transportation Projects

Roundtable to host Gwinnett transportation telephone town hall meeting on June 20.

Gwinnett County residents will have the opportunity to offer opinions regarding a regional transportation project list during a June 20 telephone town hall meeting. Members of the Atlanta Regional Transportation Roundtable executive committee are currently in the process of whittling down a 445-item, $22.9 billion "unconstrained" list of suggested transportation projects into a "constrained" list that can be funded by the $7 billion in revenue a proposed 1 percent transportation sales tax is expected to generate for regional projects. Next July, voters will be asked to approve the penny sales tax to fund a specified list of regional transportation projects. The tax, if passed, will remain in effect for 10 years.
