Blue Devils Diamond DeShields Named MVP in World Championship

Norcross High basketball standout helped the USA Women's basketball team wins against Spain for the gold medal in the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship.

The USA Basketball Women’s U17 World Championship team beat Spain on Sunday in order to win the gold medal for the year, according to USA Basketball. Norcross High's Diamond DeShields earned the MVP award for the tournament. After beating Spain 75-62, the USA team took home first place in the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship at Sporthallen Zuid in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. DeShields ended up grabbing eight rebounds and giving out five assists during the game. Throughout the entire season, the offense guard set two USA highs with her 14.8 ppg. set and 108 field goal attempts. She also won gold medals with USA teams for the U19 World Championship team in 2011 and the U18 Americas Championship team in 2010. For Norcross High, DeShields …

Norcross Girls Fall in Semifinals

Two-time defending state champion lost to McEachern 64-61.

Norcross High School's hopes of three-peating in Class AAAAA girls basketball came to an end Thursday in Duluth. Despite storming back from a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter, the Blue Devils lost to undefeated McEachern 64-61 in a state semifinal game at the Gwinnett Arena. Norcross had won the previous two state titles. The Blue Devils trailed 54-41 early in the fourth quarter before pulling to as close as two points with less than two minutes remaining. But McEachern made four of its last five free throws and Norcross missed two three-point chances in the final six seconds to close out the game. Updated: Norcross Teams Begin Title Defenses

The Norcross High School boys and girls teams, the defending Class AAAAA champions, have first-round games this weekend.

UPDATED with Friday's scores Three Norcross-area teams won in the first round of the state girls basketball tournament. Norcross beat Archer 85-36 in Class AAAAA, Greater Atlanta Christian beat Jordan 68-40 in Class AA and Wesleyan beat Paideia 83-26. Defense of their state Class AAAAA basketball championships will begin from different positions of power this weekend for the Norcross High School boys and girls teams. The Norcross girls open the tournament tonight at home against Archer. Norcross is 23-5, the Region 7-AAAAA champion and a decided favorite over Archer (18-10), the fourth-place team from Region 8-AAAAA. Norcross Hosts Invitational, Wins Game on Bizarre Basket

The Norcross boys basketball team pulled out an improbable 60-57 win against Charlotte Christian (N.C.) after one of the Knights players scored on his own basket in the final minute of the game. The contest was part of the 4th annual Hilton Invitational, a two-day event pitting Georgia hoops teams against stiff out-of-state competition. The Blue Devils held the lead throughout the first half, but had trouble with the Knights' 2-3 zone in the third period and found themselves down by six heading into the final stanza. On the losing end of a 52-44 score, Norcross head coach Jesse MacMillan called for full-court pressure and the Blue Devils began to cut into the deficit.  The gap was broken down to one with less than 30 seconds to play and …
