Gas Prices Expected to Increase This Week

Several factors are influencing both oil and gas prices.

Drivers have geopolitical tensions to thank for any increases they may see at gas pumps this week, according to AAA.

Prices rose slightly last week after President Barack Obama authorized support and arms for Syrian rebels, increasing tensions in what AAA describes as an "oil-saturated region," as Syria borders Iran and Iraq.

Other factors contributing to the slight increase in pump prices include the falling value of the dollar, a commerce department report that showed a three-month jump in retail sales in May and fewer jobless claims filed.

"Motorists shouldn't be surprised to see retail gas prices creep higher this week as tensions in the Mideast increase and create concerns of supply disruptions," Jessica Brady, spokeswoman for AAA, said in a news release.

"Although pump prices are higher now than they were this time last year, the Energy Information Administration expects the summer average price for a gallon of regular retail gas to average $3.53, about the same as last year."

According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Georgia was $3.46 going into this week, up just a cent from $3.45 the previous week. The national average price of regular unleaded gasoline was $3.61, down from $3.63.
