Bells Toll for the Constitution

Daughters of the Revolution ask Gwinnett churches to chime bells at 4 p.m. Monday in honor of the 224th birthday of the U.S. Constitution.

In honor of Constitution Week, local mayors signed official proclamations observing the week and members of the Philadelphia Winn chapter of the Daughters of the Revolution asked local churches to chime their bells at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16 and on Monday, Sept. 19.

Former U.S. House Rep. Bob Barr was the guest speaker at a luncheon hosted by the Georgia State Society Daughters of the American Revolution in Atlanta on Sept. 17, 2011, for the 224th birthday of the Constitution of the United States.

Philadelphia Winn DAR chapter of Lawrenceville commemorated the occasion by sending out packets to schools and libraries across Gwinnett County to highlight “Constitution Week” (Sept. 17 - 24). The packets contained miniature American flags, bookmarks, posters and other teaching aids.

In his address to the organization, Barr credited the Constitution for making America exceptional because it is the document that “defines limited powers of government and provides a mechanism for citizens to ensure the government remains one of limited power.”
