Heat Advisory And Unhealthy Air Alert Again In Force For the Area

According to the advisory issued by the National Weather Center, the heat advisory is for portions of north and central Georgia, including Gwinnett County. The area is expected to have heat indices between 105 and 109 degrees during the day. This produces hazardous conditions for outdoor activities.

A heat advisory means that a period of dangerous heat is expected. Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge is advising people to heed the advisory.

"It is safe to say that firefighters respond to a number of heat related emergencies during the warm summer months. These incidents include people who work outside or participate in outdoor recreational activities," Rutledge said.

"Firefighters suggest drinking plenty of cold refreshing water and sport drinks (to replace electrolytes) and limiting the time you spend outside in the hot sun. Take frequent breaks and go inside in the cool air-conditioning whenever possible.

"People should be sure to dress in light-weight and light-colored clothing when outdoors in the soaring heat. It is also a good practice to check on the elderly to make sure they are doing fine. Portable fans are a good way to keep cool air circulating indoors."
