Bank Robber Holds Up Wells Fargo Branch

A robber handed a teller at the Peachtree Corners branch a note demanding money, then produced what appeared to be a hand grenade said Gwinnett police.

Editor's note: When the story first published, the bank's address was listed as 6155 Jimmy Carter Boulevard, which would put the location in unincorporated Norcross. However, the Gwinnett County Police has sent out a corrected address - 6155 Buford Highway. This location is on the corner of Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Buford Highway which is inside the city limits of Peachtree Corners.

A Wells Fargo Bank in Peachtree Corners was held up Tuesday morning by a man who threatened a bank teller with what appeared to be a grenade.

Gwinnett County Police Officers got a call shortly after 9 a.m. that the Wells Fargo located at 6155 Buford Highway had been robbed but the suspect had already fled by the time police arrived.

"Employees of the bank reported that a black male suspect entered the bank at about 9:15 a.m.," said Cpl. Jake Smith, Gwinnett Police spokesman.

"He was well dressed and waited behind other customers before approaching the tellers' counter.  When it was his turn, the suspect approached the counter and presented a note demanding money.

"He then produced an object that appeared to be a hand grenade.  Once the suspect had received money from the teller, he fled the scene on foot," said Smith.

Gwinnett Police detectives and the FBI believe the man may have committed two other Wells Fargo bank robberies in the past week, in Doraville and Buckhead.

The man is described as a thinly built dark skinned black male around 6'5". Smith said that "during the robbery he wore a black button-up shirt, blue jeans, sunglasses and a straw fedora.

Wells Fargo is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect.  Anyone with information should please contact GCPD Robbery Unit detectives at 770-513-5300 or call Crime Stoppers at 404-557-TIPS (8477).
