I-85 Diverging Diamond Construction to Begin Friday

Expect lane closures and delays at the I-85 and Jimmy Carter Boulevard interchange starting the end of the week.

For Peachtree Corners commuters who use Jimmy Carter Boulevard to access I-85 beware, construction is about to begin on the diverging diamond interchange at that intersection.

The Gwinnett Village CID recently announced that the project is officially underway.

According to an email from the community improvement district, commuters can expect delays starting Friday, March 29, with lane width reduction and lane closures to begin that evening.

The intermittent lane closures will be along Jimmy Carter Boulevard from Goshen Springs Road/Crescent Drive to Dawson Boulevard/Live Oak Parkway between the hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., according to the Georgia Department of Transportation. Construction is expected to be completed within a year.

The DDI design uses the existing bridge more efficiently by switching traffic to the left to allow smooth left turns onto the interstate. Pedestrians will use a new walkway in the median, according to a previous news release.

The work involves widening approximately a half-mile of roadway and adding new retaining walls, sidewalks, traffic signals, and curb and gutter. In addition, the timing of other signals approaching the intersection will be adjusted to ensure smooth traffic flow.
