Second Presidential Candidate Forum Set in Gwinnett

The Georgia Republican Party’s Seventh District Committee will welcome presidential candidate Rick Santorum to Gwinnett for the second in a series of forums from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, at the . Santorum is a former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania. The event is free open to the public.

"The response to our first public forum with Newt Gingrich was tremendous,” said GOP Seventh District Chairman Jason Thompson in announcing the forum. “People were excited to see a candidate for President of the United States up close and had the ability to ask questions directly to Gingrich. We were packed, with standing room only. We were very happy with the way the event turned out, and look forward to hosting Rick Santorum on Nov. 29.”

“We hope to host all of the candidates before the GOP primary in March. These forums will take place according to the candidates' extremely busy schedules. We are honored to do this," he stated.

Santorum was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1990 at the age of 32, and from 1995 to 2007, served in the U.S. Senate. In 2000, he was elected by his peers to the position of Senate Republican Conference chairman.

Along with John Boehner and Jim Nussle, Santorum was a member of the "Gang of Seven" that exposed congressional banking and post office scandals, according to the announcement, prompting a Washington Post reporter to write in a recent article that "Santorum was a tea party kind of guy before there was a tea party."

As a senator Santorum was a proponent of welfare reform, a supporter of a strong military, and an advocate for government fiscal responsibility.

He also wrote and championed legislation that outlawed partial birth abortion and established the "Born Alive Infants Protection Act," the "Unborn Victims of Violence Act," and the "Combating Autism Act."

Santorum and his wife of 21 years, Karen, are the parents of seven children. He is the author of the 2005 New York Times bestseller “It Takes a Family.”
