U.S. Flags to Fly at Half Staff in Respect of Naval Yard Shooting Victims

President Barack Obama signed a proclamation on Monday. The order is in effect until sunset Sept. 20.

President Obama has ordered that all U.S. flags be flown at half-staff as a mark of respect for the victims of the “senseless acts of violence” at the Washington Navy Yard Monday.

His proclamation includes flags at the White House, all public buildings and grounds, all military posts and naval stations and on all federal naval vessels as well as at U.S. embassies and other facilities abroad.

The proclamation was signed Monday and is in effect until sunset Sept. 20.

Monday morning a shooter, later identified as Aaron Alexis, 34, began shooting inside the Naval Sea Systems Command headquarters, killing 13 people and wounding several others.
