NHS Students Get Courtyard Area to Call Their Own

Construction is underway in front of the school near the flagpole that will feature a landscaped courtyard with seating.

If you've pulled up in front of Norcross High School recently, you may have noticed the bulldozers and other equipment churning up the earth around the flagpole.

It's all part of a project undertaken by the Norcross High School Foundation of Excellence to provide a gathering area for students to enjoy.

"Construction began last week," said Mark Willis, one of the 2012-2013 foundation board members. "The area is being created for the students and will feature a courtyard with seating and will be landscaped as well."

The grassy area around the flagpole went unused and seemed like an ideal location for a gathering place for students. Pat O'Leary, a Peachtree Corners architect drew up the plans free of charge, the foundation covered the remainder of the cost.

"Pat donated his time and expertise," said Willis who noted that the architech did not have children who attended Norcross High but simply wanted to give back to the school because it means so much to the community.

The cost of the campus beautification project would not have been possible through GCPS said Willis. The work is expected to be complete by mid November.

This is a project that all of the student population can benefit from and enjoy said Willis. "We want the students ot feel like it's theirs. He said they hope to get the students involved in naming the area.

How about "Blue Devil Corner?"
